Hi all

My alternator warning light came on yesterday and over the next 30 mins drained the battery until the car stopped. Car's now home. (I had to abandon and bring the battery home to charge)

My questions:

- what are the possible causes (alternator, earth strap, voltage regulator, others?) and how do I diagnose?

- where can I get an alternator (if that is the fault) at less than the £204 plus vat quoted by BMW?

- is it an easy job to change (1996 318is M42 engine with aircon)

TIA

Edit - perhaps I should have posted this on the 3 series technical forum - apologies
