I have E46 Touring with 225/40-18 Tyres/Wheels. We find it a little bit harsh on bad road surfaces, which we have to travel on. Questions.... will the rim take a 45 or 50 profile without rubbing the bodywork and will the profile change make a difference to ride comfort?  Thanks for any advise.

Only fit tyre size and rim size combinations in accordance with BMW figures.  If you increase the rollign radii of your wheel you may upset all the electronic systems which use inputs from the wheel sensors, cruise, speedo, ABS, traction control, autobox, etc etc all use inputs from wheel sensors.

Go down to a 17" rim and fit a larger profile tyre.

I agree with andrew.  However, on a whim I swapped the std 225/17s on my E46 for 235s, same profile, and for 1% difference in OD I reaped a decent improvement in the ride and no preceptible handling deficit or other problems.  I did change tyre brand at the same time though, and that can have a huge effect too...

If all 4 wheels are fitted with larger tyres would this upset the electronics?
