Subject: Decent tyres at decent prices???

Hi All,
I need a couple of tyres for the back of my E60 535d. Originals are Contis, but they're coming in around £280 EACH! I've been told Falken have the 453 which is allegedly better than the 452, but Kumho have the Ecsta Le Sport which gets very good wet reports. They are £168 each, a huge difference. I daren't fit crap, but anyone got experience of these, or better? Thanks chaps.

Decent tyres cost decent money IMO.

You get what you pay for.

How big are your chariots rear shoes?  I was about that price for each one of my Dunlop SP Sports.

The rears are 275 35 ZR 19 96Y, to give them their full Sunday title. I can get Dunlops for about £230 a pop, but are they any good?

Are they runflats you are after at that price?  That's not a bad price for Dunlops at that size, mine are same but width/profile but on an 18" rim.

Never had any issues with the Dunlops on my car for over 50,000 miles.  Well no issues that haven't been caused by an overly heavy right foot and 333 bhpLOL  Plenty of grip in wet and snow.

No, I wouldn't have runflats again, despite their get you home advantages! I'll look closer at the Dunlops if you reckon they are ok. It's mainly wet performance I'm after..

How does the car ride on non runflats then?

Tyres, along with brakes are a part of the car where you want to spend money, not save it.

I fitted snow tyres to a spare set of wheels I have for my Transit and fitted them just as the snow went but they are very grippy in the wet too. I fitted Uniroyal tyres and they're great.

I was able to stick to the rear bumper of a Scooby WRX the other day on some very wet twisty roads near here, clearly, on the straight, he was offski but on the bends, his rear view mirror was full of Ford badge. LOL

When I was looking for my M5, if I'd have found one with Falkens (for example) I'd have asked myself "What else has this guy scrimped on?" Dont get me wrong, Falkens are great tyres, I loved them on my 325. Not that I intend to but if I had a bump, I wouldn't want the insurance company to have any chance of wriggling out of a claim due to the quality of the tyres.

I know Andrew is kidding but for me, its a real consideration. I need a tyre that can handle 507BHP and transfer it to the road and keep me out of the ditch. I also show the car so want a tyre that takes a decent shine aswell. The Michelins get the power down as well as the Continentals but after seeing Vpriceys tyres shined up, they look ace. (I want me some of that Cool)

I dont intend to sell the car in the forseeable future but if I did have to, Quality tyres send a certain message to a potential buyer as to the maintenance of the vehicle.

The fronts are XL and the rears are standard construction on your link. Think I put Pilot Sport XL's all round according to the spec on my M5 when I had it.
As long as your tyres are speed rated to the car then the Falkens would be ok for Insurance.
I tend to look for a quality tyre on a car too when buying and there is nothing worse than a non matching set of boots!

I agree but I had to put an emergency pilot sport 2 on my car with the other three PS1s still on it. After some nice person placed an M8 bolt under my wheel, 2 weeks after I bought the car.

Sorry was tired when I wrote that.

I meant to write. The rest were all matching apart from one tread patter. That was completly different from the rest.

You know me, I can be a bit pedantic about symmetry lol

Hmm intresting the Contis give a slightly better wet grip than the Dunlops....and better fuel consumption.  Dunlops are quieter.  Would rather have better wet grip before better fuel consumption improvements.

I've just kept the OEMs for my car so never did any homework on tyre performance till now.

Hmmmmm.  Will bear that in mind when I need new shoes.  Just shows you. Cheers for the info Cambell.

Thanks for all the chat boys. I'm half thinking of changing the car, otherwise would not be too worried about spending the thick end of 500 beer vouchers. However, mix in some Christmas spend and it doesn't add up. MOT's up in 10 days so I've got to get the skates on one way or another. I've been looking at the part-worn route too as a stop gap, but availability is the trouble there with this size in non run flats.

Interesting thread.  No one has mentioned the fact that the suspension on RFT equiped BMWs is designed to be used with the stiffer sidewall of the RFT. Remove the runflat and fit ordinary tyres and all of a sudden you will get a much softer ride as the suspension is now over soft.  Granted the flex of a sidewall on a 35 or 30 profile on a non RFT will not be much but I would think if you go from a RFT on a 50 or above profile to a non RFT on a 50 profile you will notice a change in ride.

Never had any issues with the ride in my E60 on RFT on 18" rims.  My first E60 had 17" rims and the rear tyre pressure was over 41 psi and the ride was very firm.  These 18" tyres run at a lower psi and the ride is better.

Not that I'm needing tyres now but when I did look at non RFT of the same make and spec as the RFT fitted they were only a few £££ like £20 less than RFT so about 10% of a saving and not the 30% that is being banded about on that post.  To me the only slight saving in going to runflats was lost in the need for having to buy a space saver wheel and jack etc for £150 from BMW.

Plus runflats saved my bacon when http://www.bavarian-board.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=46096&pn=1" rel="nofollow - I hit a pothole .  Granted the car was off the road for a few days while I sourced a replacement rim as I didn't have a spare....
