I know I've said this before and it got mixed responses.

I think that when we're out and about on a drive, radio comms would be sooooo handy. Remember last year when the convoy leader lead 15 cars through a school carpark, how much better would it have been if he was able to say "stop guys, I've made an erse of this".

I would suggest that purely for safety reasons, in convoy, only the lead middle and rear cars talk but it would be sooo handy if everyone else could hear whats going on.

Can anybody remember leaving the pub near Penicuik, heading for Newhouse and poor Tommy ended up near Carlisle ? (Despite 2 sat navs) This wouldn't have happened if we were in touch.

Readily available 446MHZ (PMR) walkie talkies would be ideal for this and I recon a few of you will have them lying about. The disadvantage to these radios is that they are very low power, this means that the range is not too fantastic.

As most of you will know, a few of us have Amateur Radio licences and I'm looking into getting some professional grade walkie talkies.  I have found a supplier that can supply these radios in a job lot of 10. The advantages of these radios is that they are far far better quality, 10 times more powerful which increases range and can cover the Amateur Radio frequencies and the 446MHz (PMR) frequencies.

I will be happy to program the radios to only work on the licence free section on 446MHz so nobody can get in trouble.

I am happy to order these radios and program them. The job lot price works out at £28.42 per radio meaning I will have an initial outlay of £284.20. (Bargain)

Who would like one ? Once I get to 10, I'll make the order.

We used to have a couple of walkie talkies a number of years ago.
Never knew who they belonged to, perhaps Stevie Gill??
They would indeed be a good buy I think but I don't attend enough meets to justify.

What range are you talking Cambell?

It would depend on the terrain etc but at the power output claimed, I'd expect up to 2-3 miles in a built up area and 3-5 miles in open clear ground. This will depend on the charge in the battery.

Nice find Cambell, i also think there would be a brilliant asset to us when on runs with large or small numbers. a good example was our trip to the lakes a couple of years ago, Cambell and i had our radios in the car and were able to relay messages, pass info from front to back of the convoy. A fantastic way of keeping us all safe, together and intouch. I'm in. Approve

Kind of wee change of plan. The radios that I had found have way more features than we / you need for this application.

I've found some of the same quality on 446MHz and prospective range that I suggest and guess what..........way cheaper. Look http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10pcs-Walkie-Talkie-UHF-BAOFENG-BF-888S-2-Way-Radio-10pcs-Seaker-mic-UK-/190744038197?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D5388092655470875654%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D190744038197%26" rel="nofollow - here

Robin already has one and Paul and I are going to order ones that will do the Amateur Radio frequencies aswell so I'll start the list again, this time radios costing £19 each. Again, I'm happy to program them with the relevant frequencies.

Sounds good, stick me down for one.
For Davy's info, they are legal to use when driving, two way radios, frequency dependant are exempt from the 'use of a hand held device' regulations. So I have been informed!

You are correct Barry, I have a copy of the official legislation somewhere and will post it up when I find it. It is however deemed only for the passing of "short messages" not having a blether. Trust me, if you have a bump, there is a real danger of being done with driving without due care and attention.

Yeah, I know, I'm a boring fart but my licence took me a year at night school and then seven years of home study to get to where I am.  Much as you're my mate, I'm not getting involved in supplying to non licenced people.

Oh aye, and I wouldn't want you to pay the huge fine and have the minimum of 6 months in prison as a result of radio spectrum abuse.

Mind you, its only a 2 day course to get a Foundation Licenece nowadays Wink

OT - back in the 'good old days' when I had to drive over 50 miles to work - from Kent to Greenwich - I was one of the first with a [illegal Wink] AM CB radio - found it invaluable to ease the tension - and have a chat of course with all the other naughty boys Big smile

Then 'they' introduced the legal FM radio - so I got a licence and tried that - bl00dy useless bit of kit with a range of about 500 yards, so had the FM set on show, the AM set hidden, and a 'stealth' aerial LOL - worked a treat.

Not a daft idea but they work out at about £19 each, there's nobody on here that canny afford that, justifying it is a different matter as a couple have outlined. (which is cool)

Tommy should be paying the lot...this is gonna save him at least £200 in fuel a year.

Its licence free, you can say what you want but common decency dictates that we steer clear of swearing (children may be listening) politics and religion (you never know who may be listening).

My idea really is for a safety product, how many times has a car in a convoy squeezed into a gap in traffic out of a junction just so they can keep an eye on the rest of the cars to see where they are going ? How many times does the center of the convoy slow to a dangerous walking pace to enable cars behind who may get lost to catch up? Its madness and easily fixable.

I'm sure that we'll initially have the 10-4 crap but if we settle into a lead car, middle car and tail car  tramsmissions predominantly with everybody listening and with only safety related messages being passed (Issy, its clear to pass) etc that this will work very well and keep us all safe.

Just my thoughts.

We used to use PMR Radios on the Z car cruises I used to do - radio of choice was the Motorola T5522 (I still have a pair, which I'll need to dig out - they should be compatible with the group buy?)

The way we used them was that the lead, a mid and the tail driver were the only ones to transmit, except in emergency - 10 people all transmitting at once just won't work. The radios were fine in line-of-sight, but the slightest bend and contact was lost - hence the lead/mid/tail so we could relay messages

Also from experience, an earpiece or headset makes using the radios a lot better, especially in open top cars

I remember one year going to/from Gaydon we had some cheap radios great fun - journey seemed to go a lot quicker

The radios you guys will get come with a speaker / mic in the same unit. If thats no good for you Z guys, I think the ones Paul and I have ordered come with a small earpiece and mic so maybe there's a swap to be had there.

Posted By: Cambell
Date Posted: 08-February-2013 at 13:05
I've just read the specifications for the Motorola T5522, they have an output power of 0.5W and the ones I've ordered have up to 5W (typically 4W) from a full battery so 8-10 times more powerful.

See what arrived today

Dont worry, I wont charge you for my electricity

Gotta say, I'm impressed with the service from the vendor. The radios all come with Kenwood external http://www.radiocommunicationsonline.com/kenwood-kmc21-speakermicrophone-p-725.html" rel="nofollow - speaker/microphones which retail at £51.40 plus vat each so looks like you all scored.

I had to order a programming cable for these radios to put them on the frequencies that are legal to use in the UK but that will double up as a cable for my radio so thats cool.

As previously mentioned £19 each will cover it, I'll eat the cost of the cable as I'll use it for my own radio and am happy to program anyone elses that gets one off their own back. They're all now programmed and I have kept a master spreadsheet of frequencies. Programming additional radios now takes about 4 seconds per radio.
