One for the teccies.......

What do you make of this starter motor pinion?

It works fine and turns the engine over perfectly.

The teeth on the pinion are a bit mashed.  The ends of the pinion teeth where they initally engage in the flywheel ring gear look like they have been worn to a chamfer.

Now I can file down the teeth a bit to make the engagement a bit smoother and to take the burrs of them.

New pinion or attempt a smooth off with a file?

Before you ask, it isn't off the E60 it is off a recently purchased 3rd hand 11 year old Atco Balmoral petrol lawnmower (bought as my latest toy and to get stripes on my lawnBig smile) which has the optional extra key start feature (Jeremey Clarkson style Wooooowww) thus it has a starter motor.  Suprised the starter even works given that the previous owner only ever used the rip chord to start the engine.  The engine is a 148cc single cylinder unit which gives out a dizzying three and a half horse power.  Runs sweet as a nut.  Well pleased.

A replacement pinion is approx. £30 which seems absurd given other part prices.  I only paid £120 for the lawnmower in the first place!

Yeah but think how cool it is to be able to start a lawnmower with a key rather an uncooth rip cord.LOL

Cool? A £120 lawn-mower? I think not - anyway, you probably need the exercise

Lawnmower in question retailed at over £700 back in 2002.

Mere snip at £120!

I agree it was a bargain, but it is over 11 years old, so would you expect everything to work on a [BMW] car of that age? I thought not.

Bring back the starting-handle I say, then those with 'classic' cars could all stay fit!
