Looks like BMW are being run by the tree hugging marketing department instead of people passionate for the brand.

Look at this http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2013/05/3-cylinder-bmw-m-model-a-possibility-says-brand-boss.html" rel="nofollow - crap , especially the last paragraph.

Bear in mind that next season's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Formula_One_season#Rule_changes" rel="nofollow - F1 rule changes mean that engines will be downsized to 1.6 litre, albeit a V6 turbo

So if engines are more efficient, but provide the same power - is it a problem?

Yes, its a huge problem.

I dont drive an F1 car and I couldn't give a crap about the environment. I bought an M car because I want the power and the knowledge that I have a monster, not a tuned up 116i.

I bought BMW because I want build quality and a prestige brand, if this trend continues, there's no point in BMW M, we should all just buy Kia and have it tuned. Angry

Campbell, I agree with you on this. I believe a car's engine plays such a huge % in a car's overall character and personality, the likes of lambo v12s etc. Bmw M cars engines absolutely fall into this category. They have won many awards for this. It's such a shame now that we are now heading down a road where manufacturers are being pushed to develop smaller engines just to show political correctness and are not really listening to us car enthusiasts.

Quite agree.

I'm old skool but not an old fart.

I want cubes in my engines not turbos.

I want big V8s, V10s V12 etc.   I don't want some lumpy 2.0 four pot with three turbos or whatever to give the performance of my 4.4 V8.

Turbo charging within an inch of the engines life will not give a smooth revving engine.  You need 6, 8 or more cylinders to give the smooth running which is what I want in an engine.  An engine running at higher pressures due to charging or tunning etc can only be more unreliable.  A relatively unstressed normally aspirated 6pot or V8 engines will be much more reliable.

Mibbie a supercharged V8 purely for the sound of it.

A 3 cylinder engine will also sound dreadfull.

Think how awful a 3 cylinder motorbike engine sounds.  A 4 pot DIEsel engine almost sounds better.

Yip agree also, just think how awful a 1.0 Corsa 3cylinder with a crappy chaved up exhaust sounds!? Is that what an M car is going to sound like in the future!? If so I'm off to Audi, they still make a nice V8! :))

So I take it none of us vote for the Green party then?
That man with big eyebrows and a fishy name like "salmon" says its "Scotlands's oil" so we better do what we're told and use it or the country will go broke!!
If anyone here owns a motorcycle and it has more than 30,000 miles on the clock it is near worthless because the smaller capacity highly tuned engines (without forced induction ) are deemed to be past their best by that point.
Most of the group (including ourselves) have highly cherished motor cars which are over 5 years old and beyond the remit of manufacturers to consider goodwill claims for chronic engine failure in the future so it looks like another step towards a throw away society. I wonder which car manufacturer will start stamping all the components with the recycling codes to tell us which skip to put them in when the time comes.

We've had two of the coldest winters on record recently 09/10 and 10/11.

We need more big engined cars to warm the place up a bit!

None of this 3 cylinder crap.
