i have a 1996 318 tds. apart from the starting problem when it has been standing a while/overnight it is great. i thought i had it licked when i checked the lift pump was working and not partially blocked. it started great the next morning and the rest of the day but after that it went back to cranking several times before it will start.
does anyone know if they suffer from air ingress or leakback. or what the problem might be.
it has a good battery on, thankfully. it smells as if the last owner was using veg oil but i cant see that would be a problem.
any help would be much appreciated.

What are the glow plugs like?  Might be worth checking them?
