The central locking on my BMW E46 2004 compact  suddenly does not seem to be working.  When I hit the middle of the key nothing happens, although when I get in and drive the locks kick in.  Any ideas?  I have had to lock the car manually.  ThanksStar

Try changing the battery in your key fob?

Not sure if an E46 of that vintage still has a battery type fob.....

If it's the newer type they charge up by induction when in the ignition slot.  You could try a long run to 'charge' the key fob back up.

Do you have the other key to check also?

Yes thanks - the battery was down and I had to take it for a
long drive to recharge!Big smile   Unfortunately I discovered to my cost that if you lock the door with the remote and then unlock it manually it triggers the alarm!!!

Hello, I have a guru friend in the USA who helped me with a very similar problem, in my case, there is a Blue Relay behind the glove compartment, could possibly be failing, but more likely and the easiet to check, is the wiring is worn through, at the front passenger/drivers side under the carpets, likewise it wears through under the backseat, my nephew tracked the bare or breaks in the wiring, and now all the central locking, sunroof ,windows, heating all work as they should,it took him a about an hour ; in mine which 1992 318is coupe, and all it was bare and broken wires which you could even fix with electrical tape, or connectors; i am also able to switch off my alarm at the alarm; my dog is my immobiliser, he would live in the car if you let but sometimes he won't let me in without a carry on. Best of luck
Jimmy
