Hi,

South west here! :) Weymouth

Cant help noticing that this forum is a little....quiet?

What are we supposed to be doing in here anyways?

My ride:

E30, 325iSE, 88, Metallic Grey, 110k.

I would appreciate any technical help anyone is willing to offer, I have several "issues" with my car. (would have posted this in the tech forum but there is little activity in there)

Well thats it.

OK, here goes:

Mostly minor problems but some larger ones :P

1, That realtime fuel consumption gauge on the dash ither reads 50+ as in u got ur foot off the peddle or 0 even under light crusing.

2, The temperature controll dial on the dash which isnt directly linked to the slider, it has an electric motor, doesnt go all the way to hot but stops about 10 degrees off top of dial 22degrees i think. i didnt explain that very well :/

3, I have uneven tyre wear on the rear off side and the front near side and to a lesser extent the other two. What causes this, i am assumine the bushes as there is no adjustment on this (camber angle) but which ones, if i am gona replace them, would it be best if i replaced all the bushes associated with the suspension front and back, if yes what are they as in the names of the bushes(so i know what to order)

4, i have a worn cam and rockers and probably cam bearings, is it possible to remove the cam from the engine without taking the head off? i was thinking jacking the engine off its mounts and sliding the cam out over the radiator, has anyone done this?

As you can probably telll i have written this in a hurry as i am about to go out :P

My main concern is the uneven tyre wear as i have an MOT due end of the month :/

yes

I think I follow what you mean??  As for the fuel cosumption gauge, I assume that you mean the one under the rev counter.  It is quite normal for this to swing to 50+ MPG if you take your foot off.  It is also not unusual for it to swing to 0 when you put your foot down.  I suppose it depends what you mean when you say light cruising.  If you are not accelerating and you are on a flat road, the gauge should give some sort of a MPG reading (20-30?) if everything is constant.  However, it doesn't take much to cause it to swing one way or another.

As for the heater control knob, I'm not sure if I follow.  Are you saying that it doesn't turn all the way round?  If so, how far does it go?  This is not connected to an electric motor but a potentiometer.

As for uneven tyre wear, there are numerous causes of this.  The most common cause of front uneven tyre wear is the steering being out of track.  It is possible that it may be caused by the bushes too. On the front, you have the wishbone bushes that are the most likely bushes to need  replacing.  You also have anti roll bar bushes too.  On the rear, there are axle carrier bushes.  It's best to have the bushes inspected to see if they need renewing.  If they are bad enough, the wishbone bushes may cause a clunk on the front.  If the rear axle bushes are bad enough they may also clunk but more commonly, you experience a feeling of the rear of the car steering around corners.  Also, ball joints on the front may contribute to uneven tyre wear too.  Then again, a clunk maybe heard.  Often, if there is anything wrong with the front steering/suspension, you get a wheel wobble, especially under braking.  Other causes maybe worn shockers, out of balance wheels or disorted tyres.

As for the removal of the cam, I'm honestly not sure. It is possible to remove the M40 engine cam without taking the head off but I don't know about your car.

Hope this helps at least a little?

Hi guys. I just joined the forum. I'm from Bath - I think it just about counts as South West region, although it must be pretty close to Wessex.

I just bought myself a beautiful 1986 316 auto (E30). The auto 'box isn't ideal, but I kind-of bought it on impulse. It just looked so good (metallic paint and alloys and in supurb condition).

It will be sad to see it go, but go it must... as soon as I find a nice '88 - '91 325i SE :)

Hey, Steve - you're not Mike's brother by any chance?? Forgive me if I'm talking nonsense to you, but a mate of mine has a brother in Yeovil who's just bought an E34 540i Touring - and he used to own a Cav V6.
