my car has developed a rattle and what seems like a stutter. is this a problem with the exhaust?

Wasn't there a time when the cats in the exhausts used to break up causing a rattle and a blockage in the exhaust that affected performance?

I remember when my catalytic converters broke up they sounded like they had a handful of marbles in each and were especially rattly when setting off from a standstill.
