Hi there, bought my E34 about a month ago - it's a 1990 525i SE. I was wondering if there should be a warning on the car as i've left my sidelights on a couple of times this week, until lunchtime, the battery is fairly new it appears but I would have thought something should sound. The system "bongs" at me for things like washer fluid so I was wondering what the crack is. Cheers.

....and while you are thinking of Jay B's lack of bong, should my 1989 520i SE system be bonging at me for.....anything?  Where is the gong..if I'm supposed to have one?

oblige

I wasn't sure mine made a noise for 3 weeks til the washer fluid got low! Try pulling the handbrake up a touch while still coasting along, that should bring up the message and "bong"

You will only get handbrake, washer fluid, temperature warning etc if you have check control but you should still get a warning "bong" if you open your door with the ignition off and lights on.

Right i have the same problem with the lights on warning. According to bmw those fitted with check control (right/2nd button on instrument cluster is a good indication) should have a lights on warning however i have left my lights on a couple of times out of habit and not heard so much as a dicky bird.

Looking over the epc there is a lights on warning module which i can but presume fits into the loom that links up to the CCM (check control module) however i have looked behind the glove box under the steering wheel in the boot and under the back seat and cant see anything that resembles the size or shape of this module.

I have come to the conclusion that this module is not fitted on cars before 7/90 if anyone has a working lights on warning on a pre 7/90 car please let me know and ill investigate further. I am going to fit one if there is not one as its a major pain and my other cars scream at you when you open the door.

Yeah, sounds about right, mine warns of everything but the lights, let me know how simple it is to retro-fit and i'll probably do it too.

Did anyone find out where it is? And if they wern't fitted to early models as standard can you fit a bmw one, my old vauxhall had one in a lighting relay under the dash easy! Or would it be easier to go for an aftermarket one??

I get a buzzer that sounds if my lights are left on.  It may not be standard as noone else has mentioned it.  I have no gongs so maybe it was added by the previous owner?.

On my 94 525 tds i get a warning buzzer when my lights are left on and i turn ign. off. I also get a warning bong from obc. when outside temp drops to 37f.

I had the same problem as you with my M5 until i discovered that the washer fluid resevoir was cracked the plastic tends to go very brittle with the very high temperatures that the engine produces.
