Guys

Went to look at car seats yesterday for the little one (due in a couple of weeks) and was told that the seat belt in the rear of the sport models of the 3-series were too short to accomodate some baby car seat. We're looking to buy the http://www.firststepsltd.co.uk/?product_id=9888&option=Prod_detail - maxi-cosi cabrio and wanted to know whether anyone had any issues with this ?

Are the belts in the back of the sport model any shorter than the other saloons?

Thanks

Zed

I cant answer you on the belts.

When my children were small, (aged 12 down to 7 now), you could get seat securing kits from mothercare and the like.

These would fit on the bolts that secured the centre lap belt to the car ( you removed the bolts, them passed them through the metal ends of the securing straps, I think they supplied longer bolts, but I didnt need them).

The result was much better than leaving your little ones seat to the mercy of inertia reel seat belts, and ensured that the seat was fitted correctly at all times.

They werent expensive, we had a set in both cars, so we could just change the seat over.

Unwins also do a conversion kit for the lapbelt for older children, and adults http://www.unwin-safety.com - www.unwin-safety.com , but this wont worry you for a while.

It might also be worth checking halfords out, they used to do a lot of child securing safety stuff, not too sure what they stock now.

Dont worry if your car has three x three point belts in the rear, these kits will use the same bolts.

Good luck with the forthcoming arrival.

That sounds like a good solution. We are expecting number 3 in June and my wife was concerned about getting a new car that had three 3-point seat belts in the rear seat rather than having a lap belt in the middle.

We used a mammas n papas baby seat and it was fine in the old 318iS E36 but the seat belts are a touch short on the E36 M3. They are short going round the rear of the seat when putting the seat in but fit fine once the seats in place. Can't help about the E46 though sorry.

With only weeks to go until the due date it was a bit of a shocker when we realised there may be 'issues' with the car seat we had chosen months earlier!

Many thanks for your suggestions, so trips to Mothercare and Halfords this weekend.

Thanks

Kevin

I've got one of those kits fitted to my E34.

If you have a look at my post on seat belts in the general technical area, you will see why I think they are good.

Very, very easy to fit to a car with a metal parcel shelf.

Kevin-mammas n papas aint that expensive-might be worth a look. Might be worth John Lewis if you've got 1 near you-I'm getting the next seat up from them less than anywhere else on the High St or the web are doing.
