Just bought a 328i sport 97. What fuel should i be using? wasnt sure to use normal unleaded or the good stuff from SHELL stations? Any other advice outside of this topic is more than welcome. |

bimmer recommend the 'good' stuff. some people use it all the time and notice a difference in performance etc. i use whetever i'm near ie supermarkets of shell etc. ------------- vrrroom vrrroommmm! chug chug vrrroom vrrroommm! If we aren't supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat? |

Is Optimax the same as Super over in Eire - theres no such thing as Optimax over here so I assume it is. ------------- |

Hi mate, I live in the UK, and regularly visit my brother in Tallaght. As far as I can tell, they are the same octane value, but may not have a lot of the revolutionary cleaning agents that Optimax contains. Just go for the Super if you can. Dan |

Nope sorry dude, super is 97RON and 'Optimax' is supposed to be 98RON+. If you must use one of their fancy fuels try your BP stations for BP 'Ultimate' this is their answer to Shell's Optimax, which supposedly burns cleaner, car faster etc etc. -------------

From my experience over there, I have not seen any optimax or ultimate pumps in the petrol stations. I thought they just had normal and super. Perhaps the super differs from station to station. I must admit I used to fill up when they had the punt, but now they switched to the Euro, it is not that much cheaper than the UK. Everyhting seems to have got loads more expensive. Reckon you boys have been fleeced (so did the irish taxi driver that tokk me to the airport last week). |

I think I notice more of a performance difference with optimax over the bp stuff. No scientific proof though ! Both seem much better than normal unleaded, or even normal super unleaded. ------------- Best Wishes Nigel |

I've given up using Optimax as I'm unable to tell the difference. Normal unleaded most of the time (and all of the time in my 318is). An old girlfriend of mine used to work for Shell. Apparently all petrol is the same (ie all the major brands use the same distribution centres). I have a 325 and have not noticed ANY difference (performance or MPG) when i have used optimax. I have a trip computer and (around town) it averages the same (27 mpg) on both optimax and 'normal' amd at 5p per litre more, I reckon it ain't worth it. Don't know if it's keeping the inside of my engine 'cleanrer' but frankly I don't care - it's hardly likely that I will have the car in six or 8 years time when any benefits might be seen. |

| mine is a 3.2 evo maybe that makes the difference, i will always use super if it is available for the extra 3 quid a tank you might aswell i think you have to use it regularly to notice the difference |
