Can anyone recommend a good insurer for my 7? Or advise me of people to stay away from?

Try Admiral.

 

My mate (who is 38) has an E38 740i and paid £399 last year fully comp.

E-Sure are excellent I paid £500 fully comp for a 730i (V8)
