Hello

Got a big oil leak from head gasket on my E30 M3 - please does anyone know approx price for gasket from BMW and approx hours to replace? Is it worth doing anything else at the same time while the head is off or anything that I should check while its off? Car has done 120k miles, but please don't say timing chain - this is fine

thanks very much for your help

Hi

The offical time for doing the job is 8.5 hours.

The cyclinder head gasket set is £200 plus VAT from BMW.

As regards other work not really sure top end overhall whilst it is all apart, valves valve springs . Im sure others will comment.

Regards

I am sure when JohnW thought his head gasket had gone he was quoted about £300-400 tops to do the full job.

On the chain note if the heads comming off get it inspected whilst the engine is in bits (free inspection )

Or just change the sprokets if they look worn and keep the chain. Just a thought

Thanks for that - just been quoted 10 hrs labour (not from BMW) so I'll go with this I think

£200 for a head gasket - maybe I'll frame the old one and hang it on the wall

£200 is probaly for thw WHOLE head seal kit. You might get away just buying the gaskets you need. And DO NOT just change the sprockets only. This will make it worse.
Keep the chain and sprockets together as they wear together. If you chain sounds right leave it alone, or do the whole job proper. (worth considering while you have it to pieces, but if you do A, than you could do B and C and......how long is a piece of string?) In the end it is down to your wallet.

Suggest you tighten up the allen bolts first to see if you can cure the leak if not, a head gasket will cost you +/_ £70-00 from BMW. Need to change head bolts as well as they stretch another +/- £100-00.

While the head is off you may want to clean the ports out, and if you are going to change cams, now would be the time. Valve clearances need to be done afterwards and a special tool is required for this, along with shims.

With due respect if you are not a mechanic, I would rather send it to be done through one of the dealers or through the likes of Bexley or Moseley motorsport depending where you are in the country.

Good Luck.
