A well covered area.. if anyone has a link to a previous thread???

Any tips or horror stories you can pass on guys?

The engine is sounding more tappety at warm up albeit I can't detect any power loss but then the car hasn't been driven hard since last year.. everything seems fine at the mo but the current warranty expires in August.. car has just crossed 44K and there's no record of a previous VANOS replacement. Car remains under the used-approved scheme -which I think covers 100% all mechnical as opposed to the 4+ scheme that only covers 50% of major engine work..

Have you visited the Dealer?. When I thought mine sounded like it had Nuts & Bolts going around, Paid a visit.Chief Tec walked out, Said "Vanos" and walked back-Goodby!!.Had a feeling this might happen , so made sure it had a warranty.BMW NOW proceed with a 3-4 stage check, instead of renew straight away, then renew stage x stage.took 8 days this way.Presume this proceedure was due to MANY expensive claims for vanos.Have NEVER got a answer to "why were the owners used as development engineers" instead of the department who should have made sure it was correct for production.??.All work was covered, at times still seems to rattle, but having compared with other Z,s all seem the same.Could be worse!!!!, some have had two replaced

Cheers mate - I'm liaising with our local chairman and the garage has sound club connections. Car still under warranty but I hear it's a different story under 4+ scheme.

If your car is covered under the official BMW Approved Used Car warranty you should have no problems with this claim.

My car is an 86,000 mile 1990 E30 covered under the Approved Used Car Warranty and has had successful claims for an entire new gearbox when the synchro on 2nd went, a new d.m.e, and 2X air conditioning units, numerous miscellaneous claims for odds and sods, and most recently a £300 claim for fitting a new seat base because it was a bit wobbly.

The 4+ scheme refers to discounted parts and labour for routine service items. However, there is a 5+ Years & Other Makes Warranty that is (as you point out) no way near as comprehensive & it only lasts for 6 months.

An important point to note is that the 5+ years refers to the age of the car when the warranty was applied, not how old it is now. In addition, the Approved Used Warranty is now unlimited mileage, so as long as you pay your annual premium and keep the service record up you will have the same level of cover as you do now regardless of the age of the car (some wear & tear items drop off the list as the mileage rises, but these are still covered by the MOT insurance).

Nice one.. I'll remember to renew the approved-used warranty in August.
