there is one in huddersfield!!! i didnt even know they existed. and the guy whos it is isnt even a club member.... i told him to join up! anyone else got one? |

Is the x for Executive? no, the ix indicates the 4wd model as far as I am aware!
the last exec model BMW made was on the e23 7. |

with regard to BMW, x represents 4 wheel drive (e.g. X5). It used the same drive system as the 325iX but was otherwise the same as any other E34. It was limited to a few countries (Scandanavia?) only. | Yup I've got one, shes a 525ix Tourer to be precise and she does indeed have all wheel drive capabillity. Sadly I have managed to burst a badly corroded suspension oil pipe when I loaded her up with a hatch full of bricks, but the self leveling did work well. Well replace all of the pipework that is up and around the rear suspension in a few weeks so she should run as good as new soon (New bushes are already on) |

I was in Chicago about a year ago and the amount of 330iX, 325iX, 525iX etc there is boggling... i remember seeing a 525iX Touring for sale in the North (of IRL) a while back too. So they are out there! i have driven one before - was going to buy it from a guy in dublin around 3 years ago.
drives like its on rails but slighly slower than a standard one ------------- |

She's pretty slow off the mark, being an auto and having an engine management problem too, but does hold on VERY well, infact the only time I have managed to get her to slide is on grass |

525ix's are as rare as hens teeth in the UK, so my mechanic tells me. Dunno why they discontinued them as they're supposed to be pretty good. I've wondered how the 4wd affects the fabled BMW 50:50 weight distribution - did they change around other bits to compensate or just make it front heavy? I've also wondered why BMW haven't gone for a road car with 4wd since the 525ix (rather than just these X5, X3 thingies). OK, so some of us like to slide the tail now and then but being able to turn it on and off would be even better. I mean look at the 'performance' 4wd saloons & estates out there from mainstream manufacturers: VW 2.8 V6 passat, Jaguar X-type, Volvo S60-R & V70-R, Subaru Legacy (bit slow), Mitsubishi Galant VR4, and last but not least the Audi Quattro especially in S6 / RS6 form. There's also the rare Subaru Legacy GTB turbo on import only and the slightly slow Skoda Octavia 1.8T. Probably some more to add but that'll do for now. I would hazzard a guess that BMW envisaged the 525ix as the sort of car that would be bought by folks in alpine regeons to enable them to get about. rather than being used as a high performance road car, since I would say that all the cars mentioned would leave my 525 for dead (Including the Skoda "Quattro") But as I said before the IX is very sure footed, just the thing for a winding alpine pass, and room for 5 people and a half tonne of bricks

Seeing as BMW have got in the small coupe / hatch market with the 1 series, I was just wondering whether they would think about the 4wd performance saloon market. I would buy a 4wd 525i, 528i, 535i or 530d instantly assuming I had the cash. Not all of us want massive tonka toy like X5's. Cheers Stone |
