This could be almost anything from a dodgy switch etc etc , but ...... when it happened to me it was the wiring loom on the boot.

If you open your boot, on the left hand "hinge" there is a black cover, remove this and you will see the loom. On mine, it was broken at the back.

It flexes every time you open the boot, I just used some multimeter test lead wire ( very flexible stuff), and spent a couple of hours in the boot with some heatsink and a soldering iron.

The wires were all colour coded, so I just remade all of them.

I am with nigel on this one, it may be the switch but its more than likely the wiring loom feeding the boot lid. I redid all the cables in mine even though they didnt all need doing i put a 4 inch extension on them and this gave them alot more room when opening and closing the boot (so as not to crimp the cables). I would advise using a thicker stranded cable for each one in the hot spot area (wherever they are breaking) this will give them a little more protection against crimping or snapping along with extra strands to snap should it happen again (last longer).

Well I started in the boot and wiggled the cable with the ign on and the car in reverse, there was no sign of the lights flickering as if it was a dodgy wire! So I crawled underneath unplugged the switch and bridged the connector and they worked. So it was a duff switch in the end.

Thanks for the update Warren and glad you got it sorted. I will add the switch issue to my memory of possible answers to others problems.
