so my ecu is fried on my 1995 740. It seems that when the battery was recharged overnight (after leaving lights on one day) there must have been some power surge and the ecu is broken!

I had thought that I would get another second hand ecu and hey presto. However, I have been reliably informed that I need to buy a new 'blank' one that needs to be 'coded' to my car!! Cost....................£2500+vat!!!

Can anybody shed any light on whether this is actually true?

Many thanks.

Surely you can buy a second hand one and have it recoded. Who told you this, was it a main dealer? if so then try contacting somewhere like FAB and asking them.
