Don't forget -
23rd April is St Georges Day - Fly the flag! I know, I know, this is a (german)BMW Forum, but lots of us here are English, and should be proud of it, regardless of who made our car. I'm certainly flying the flag of St George tomorrow on my E30 M3! The Irish celebrate St Patricks Day (I've seen them do it at the races!  ), the Scots St Andrew, and the Welsh St David (complete with leek) - it's about the English celebrated as well.
It should be a National holiday in my opinion.  Rule Britannia and all that. ------------- Cats know your every thought. But don't care. |

Actually on that note ("fly the flag"), did you know that the Union Jack is based on three flags, that of St. George(white with red +), St. Andrew(blue with white X) & St. Patrick(White with red X). I didnt think the flag had anything to do with st patrick, I had always thought it was st george, st andrew, and st david. England, Scotland, & Wales ! ------------- Best Wishes Nigel |

I read the link, and they said they "thought" it was. My history isnt very good, but had we been horrid to you Irish chaps by 1801 ? I was definately taught England, Scotland, and Wales, but history depends on the country ! I can demonstrate the above point with a short tale about Guatamala. I was recently working in a factory over there, and the factory owner took me home for dinner, and to meet his family and friends, its a long way so your a bit of a celebrity in southern america for not being north american ! Over dinner the boss was demonstrating his knowledge of my country, its history, and history in general. He spoke of the great british pirate, Francis Drake !! We had quite a laugh about a Spanish colony regarding him as a pirate, whilst in his home country he was a knight of the realm, and somewhat of a hero. My teachers could have been wrong of course, but strange Peter seems to have been taught the same thing. ------------- Best Wishes Nigel |

woo hoo, Im right because your queen is after http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page398.asp - telling me so (should have taken bets)!!! The flag consists of three heraldic crosses. The cross saltire of St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is a diagonal red cross on a white ground. This was combined with the previous Union Flag of St George and St Andrew, after the Act of Union of Ireland with England (and Wales) and Scotland on 1 January 1801, to create the Union Flag that has been flown ever since. The Welsh dragon does not appear on the Union Flag. Strange I was taught the red diagonal bits were to shut the welsh up !! But yours seems to make more sense I love your united bit regarding wales, already overrun by the english would be more like it. lol

Thanks for the support KB (and everyone else)- but just to be pedantic - what moi? Its only the Union Jack when it's flown from a ship/boat/vessel. Otherwise it is the Union Flag
