I have a metallic rattle when I go over bumps from around the front Passenger side suspension on my E39 520i. Its getting worse but can find anything obvious. Seen comments about roll bar link, is this where i should be looking? If so what is it and can I do the job myself.

Hello m8,

Obviously rattles can be hard to explain in writing but the most common rattle on E39 from the front is stones in the backplates behind the front discs ( very light tinny rattle !!) Hope this helps

I've had brake pads that rattled. Windows down and free-wheel when you're going down a bumpy road. Gently apply the brakes and see whether the rattle goes.

Funnily enough I just found the source of my metallic rattle today - the wheel centre on one alloy was loose.

One thing you can do to try and locate it is bounce the car up and down when its stationary. This might give you a pointer as to whether the rattle is in the suspension or the unsprung parts (wheels, hubs, brakes etc)...

Mine rattles too (528i 1997).  Was told by the dealer that it was stones trapped behind the disk.  They've just replaced the front caliper but there is still a rattle so either they didn't bother getting the stones out  or it is something else.  Still investigating.

I'll second, or third the suggestion about stones stuck behind the disk.  Had it too.

I had a rattle from the front nearside wheel on my 998 cc Mini Mayfair (Student Wheels before I traded up to a 204 bhp Vx Senator) that was caused by the disc splasher shield being loose on the fact that it being a British Leyland design the steel was as thick as paper so the support bracket corroded very easily and caused the splasher shield to move about hence the rattle.

You might have to take the disc off to resecure the splash shield I'm not sure.  That will also get rid of stones stuck between the disc and the splasher shield.  You might want to try and investigate that quickly otherwise the stones may serioulsy damage the disc surface if given enough time.  If the shield is of thin enough metal you should be able to bend it about to free any trapped stones, lets face it thay must have come in thru a gap in the first place.

Kenny

In my case I dropped it in to my dealer because I was thinking suspension type issues, so I can't say how difficult it was, but I believe they removed the disk, etc. and cleaned things up and put it all back together.  They charged the equivalent of about stg£60 for it so it can't have taken too much time.
