Subject: Wobbly Gear Stick ?
Date Posted: 20-May-2004 at 17:02

Hi all,

I have small problem with my gear stick. When the power is down it is fine, but if I lift off the gear stick wobbles around when in gear. The same thing happens if im going along at a constant speed.

I can also move the gear stick around quite a lot when in gear.

This sounds like a gear linkage bush problem to me, but anyone got any idea which one, and is it a simple fix ?

Cheers

James

I think it must be the gear selection rod bush, and it looks a pain to replace....

James,

Have a look at this - http://www.bmwcarclubgb.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3947&KW=short - gear-knob link

It's slightly off subject, but it does show you the bits needed to stop the wobble. and whilst you're about it, you could swap the gear-lever as well.

It's not hard - you just need to be able to get underneath.
All the parts are available from the dealer - and you won't want a 2nd mortgage for them either!

I've done it - so that proves it can't be hard!

James,
Have a search in google for this type of thing, I know I read good instructions on one of the US E30 M3 sites for this subject. As the others say, the components are cheap, but you have to remove the exhaust and prop to get at the linkage properly.
Having said all this, my shifter was pretty bad and buzzed over 4K revs, when I have the car checked over by someone I know who knows E30's very well he changed a small plastic cup type thing that the ball of the lever sits in from inside the car, it cost peanuts and made a huge difference to the shift feel, and stopped it buzzing a lot. I still need to do the full linkage but its not so urgent.

Here's a full list of the linkage parts, most of them are cheap

James,

It's page 54 of the April/May 2004 issue so it's been out for a while now. If you didn't get yours give the office a call.
