Topic: A warning!
Posted By: Peter Fenwick
Subject: A warning!
Date Posted: 04-June-2004 at 11:58

I recieved my copy of EVO magazine yesterday (or the bible as I like to call it) and one of the readers letters really made me think so I thought I would share it with you all.

I can't remeber the exact detalis but it went something like this.

A young lad is driving along one day and gets involved in a race with another driver. The other driver looses control, crashes, the car catches fire and he dies. The young lad then ends up in court and is sentenced to 3 years in prison. Even though he didn't cause the other car to crash the court still took the view that as he was invloved in racing on the public roads he was in some way responsible for the other drivers death. The actual reason the car lost control was the driver driving outside of his abillity.

How often when getting involved in a bit of racing do you consider the abillity of the other driver, especially if you don't know them. I'm sure most of you wouldn't consider getting invoilved in such things, but I know on occaisions I have. It certainly made me think about my actions.

And they weren't insured and had no tax!!

But they were banned for 2 years so they can't drive - as if thats going to stop them.

Whats the point of banning someone for driving without insurance, license, tax & MOT they should be made to pay the premium of what it would have cost them to actually insure the car they are driving.

Insurance, MOT, etc should be displayed like a tax disc.

John,

Try starting a new topic on the five series tech forum. I believe there may be parts for sale on this website, although I have never looked. Try clicking on the 'cars for sale' link in the top right hand corner of the page.

bit of a random interjection there. anyway, you need to keep pearl gouramis as a pair really. I got two males for some reason, so I had to go back and buy two females and they've smartened themselves up remarkably.

This is also true of "normal" driving, how do you know that the person behind is going to stop in time? Or the person you are overtaking isn't going to switch lanes, without checking a blind spot/mirrors??

I was always taught to drive by expecting the unexpected, a cliché I know! How ofter do you witness acts of pure stupidity on the roads??

Unfortunately, this is the way it is. I am always twice as carefull in my own car, or someone elses! But in the company car, I tend to wait that extra second to see if they will see me!

The difference is that if you are driving normally and some clown does something stupid then it is his fault, however if you are racing said clown and he crashes then you could potentially be held responsible.

You think you are being attacked, when I am officially duffed by the IAM I will post some of the stuff they have said to me, as I have commited serious crimes, by suggesting I can understand why people ignore some motorway warning signs, roadworks speed limits etc.

At the moment they have me listed as a flag waving ( therefore an undesirable type, as displaying the st georges cross on my car makes me a football hooligan or bnp supporter , I have only had one message of support saying why shouldnt he fly his countrys flag), ex van driving, bmw driving thug, that does such things to embarrass the IAM as refer to the good people of camera partnerships as scamera partnerships, smoke cigarettes, and goes to Belgium to legally buy tobacco.

I, along with one other, also critised their last press release supporting cycling week, that was all they did, support it, no constructive comments etc, like suggesting they read the highway code.

And as for having two types of speed camera detectors, and explaining how they can be used as a road safety device.....well .......!

Spokey

To become a member you have to pay £85.

To access the forum, you have to pay the above, and pass the test then you are recommended for membership.

After that its £15 a year, actually worth paying as it has just saved me £52 on my vectra insurance with performance direct, one of the companys that advertise with the bmwcc.

Once a full member you can then wind them up by being human, driving a BMW automatically winds them up, as does driving a van, flying an English flag etc.

The driving course is brilliant, I'd recommend it to everyone, but we even have one chap posting that says if he is involved in any accident then it must be his own fault as he didnt avoid it !!

I'm very unsure as to wether they will allow me to remain, or if I will be able to put up with the total cow poo some of them spout.

We have members on here that are of the opposite "ilk", must drive everywhere at 100 mph plus, think it clever to act stupidly on the road etc But at least on here you can, or more correctly are allowed, to argue against them.

There are also far fewer "idiots" on here, than there are self righteous gits on there lol.

Its not that I'm not happy, I'm very happy to promote something as good as their, or should I say "our" driving course.

They conform as much to the self righteous image they have, as unfortunately a lot of BMW drivers conform to the image we are labled with.

I'll stick at it as long as I'm allowed too.

Those of us who differ in opinion to the rest often come under fire Nigel...I get it all the time...probably cos I used to race Street, Super Street and Methanol Funny cars in the 80's and used to drive an HGV1 across the continent...

The old 'OMG You're a woman!!!'  rang out from every corner and some hated it if I beat them in races or had to rescue them after they had overshot the pin while picking up a trailer....

Some of us will NEVER be in the right, no matter what we try.

Fair comment Goldryder - I personally think us blokes should do more to encourage women to get into stuff they have socially been excluded from in the past.

Nigel, I just re-newed (can't think how to spell that!) my IAM membership. I often suprise people when I tell them I am a member - drive a BMW, young and all that.
