Greetings all.

Fresh back from the local dealer's driving day, and following on from the last few posts with regards swapping 330ci for 330cd etc, I thought I would share some impressions of the cars I drove today.

Started off with a X3 with the 3.0l injection engine. All the demonstrators had huge amounts of options fitted and this also applie to the X3 - around 12k's worth of extras. Liked the driving position. Didn't like the engine mated to the body. Fuel consumption worse than the coupe. Makes sense with a 3.0d, (not available yet), but not with the petrol. Overall -

Next was the 645i cabrio. I was looking forward to it. It is very smooth and comfortable and quiet with the roof up. The exhaust has a nice raccous note when pushed and the car gathers pace very quickly - no fuss, no drama. Very nice and would get you anywhere as quick as you like, in the utmost comfort. Nice looking but zero space in boot. Again, a fully loaded demo model. Nice I-drive and colour.

Overall -

Next came the M3 Cabrio. VVeeerryy bumpy on the country lanes but what an engine! What an exhaust note! What a turn of speed. Wonderful. What can I say? OK not so comfy as the 645i but I know which one I would rather go for a drive/play in.

Overall

Lastly, the new 530d touring. I wanted to try it for the engine, not te model, but the 5 series was good looking and comfortable. Engine was great and picked up speed very well even dragging the 5 series weight around. Slightly dissappointed in the engine note when pushed but can't have everything.

Overall -

Thanks to Dick Lovett dealerships, (especially Bristol) and sorry for the plug if not allowed here but they are good and have treated me very well since going there. Event was well oragnized, relaxed and the test route was a 20 minute route and free - annoyed I went to Rockingham now. Refreshments laid on and no hard pressured sell. Great weather, great event - thanks to all who arranged it.

By the way, I dont like the positions of the new indicator and cruise control stalks. The cruise control is sited below the left indicator stalk and the two main 'upper' stalks are doglegged upwards. Not keen but will just take some getting used to I suppose.
