Hopefully an easy question.
E39 , is the wood trim really wood or a plastic imitation.

My guess is that it is plastic.

Anyone know?

Spike, I have black plastic trim in mine. I suspect all styles are plastic.

I can't speak for the newer style wood trim but on the older E34 the trim was a wood veneer finish moulded for the relevant section in the car. These were replaced for the later models with plastic wood effect trim. I would hazard a guess that the E39 would be plastic wood effect as well.

I am on the look out for carbon efect trim if anyone knows a supplier for the E34.

I am very glad to say the wood in an E39 is the real stuff!

Seen some PreWoodec kits on larkspeed.com - you could try them if they have a carbon effect kit for the E34.

Russ,

How did you get on with the dash kit? I'm thinking of changing mine too as I have a wood look on aluminium kit which just looks bad.

Cheers

Has anyone seen the quality and fit of these kits?

I also saw a method where the actual car part can be printed on. I was utterly amazed. Check out http://www.cubic.co.jp - www.cubic.co.jp

that looks rather cool. however i feel taking the car apart to get the parts finished is a tad extreme. Regarding the kits themselves from the info i have obtained they are 2.5mm thick with a very high gloss finish to make it look 3 dimensional. I have already purchased parts like this and they do look quite effective looking at them in person.

here is a picture of a dash surround i bought in carbon trim it looks a bit funny in the picture but looks alot better in different lights and angles.

Once i get the rest of the trim it should offset the black interior a little making it not so dark.

Slightly off-topic question but since Russ has posted a photo of his dash above, I thought I'd ask... does anyone know what the little round light above the oil pressure warning lamp is?  It's the one adjacent to the 0 on the rev counter.  My manual doesn't say what it is so that got me wondering...

That's the sensor which determines how bright the OBC/Mileage display is, if the sun shines on the dash the displays get brighter.

And it's the ASC (Automatic Stability Control) warning light not the oil pressure warning light

Ingenious, clever folk those Germans!  Thanks for correcting me there (next time I'll read the handbook properly)

Hi Russ,

Great fit. The pictures on Design Tuning's site do the kit more justice. I didn't see the clocks surround in the E34 kit, though.

The clock surround i bought off ebay.com (US seller) a few months back just to see if it would look any good before doing the rest of the car. The black carbon fibre effect does accent the black interior well without it standing out too much.

I am off shore from tomorrow so i wont be able to do much until i get back in 3 weeks but when im back ill look into the kit more.
