Hope someone can HELP!!!!

My BMW 523i se E39 is making a tapping noise from the gearbox when the car has warmed up. The noise happens when the car is out of gear and clutch is out, but when i depress the clutch pedal the noise disappears. I have taken to some private garages who seem to think it could be the Thrust bearing OR ********* gear !!!

Anyone had this problem?

Cheers

More than likely the thrust bearing, i had the same problem with an old 525 i used to own, a clutch+bearing change cured the problem.

Some of the ZFgearboxes exhibit a sort of input shaft rattle, it's difficult to describe. This goes as soon as the clutch pedal is pushed as the input shaft is no longer rotating.

The noise would possibly still remain if it was the release bearing, as it is now loaded when the pedal is pushed down.

This was a common noise on my Maserati Biturbo with a ZF dog-leg box.

Good point, thinking about it I only used to get the noise when i pushed the clutch pedal down (a worrying grinding noise)

-could be worn out  torque springs in the clutch. These will rattle in exactly that way too.

cheers
