BMW Handbook advises 235x45x17 and 255x40x17 rears

on 8J front 9J back

that's what came as standard M tech on my E39 535iA sport although it's a 2000 model

Had a 523i with replica Schnitzers on 18's and hated them exchanged them for a 17 inch version of the M5 standard alloys and the whole car's handling changed in minutes (for the better I might add)

18's look good but hated driving with them (ok for track days though)
