Subject: what does the timer do?
Date Posted: 25-February-2003 at 23:01

On the trip computer of my 95 540 there is a button called timer, when pressing this it gives me a on/ off setting and 2 pre-set time inputs. when operated by the timer all the fans switch on and blow, reading the manual I understand this to be a heater, but at the moment no heat. Am I operating it incorrectly ( tryed it on a very cold morning with the engine cold if it makes any difference) or is it broke. Have also played around with the heater control postions.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I would assume that you've not got an owners glovebox book since, in my 88 e34 book it refers to the timer.  It's a way of presetting a heater to come on (can't remember whether its for the interior or to pre-heat the engine).  The two settings offer two timings.

It's designed to ease you into your journey in the cold winter mornings.

No doubt someone more versed in the e34s will fill you in further.

I guess its the same as the timer on the onboard computer that was fitted to higher spec e28's. The timer on the e28 was to activate a secondary fuel heater (located under the rear seat) to come on in the mornings to warm up the interior before you got in. But just cos u got a timer fitted didn't necesserally mean that you had a fuel heated fitted.
