Does anyone know what can cause a god awafull squeal from the front drivers window when putting it down, not so much going up.

The glass isn't getting scratched, It's the only one that does it!

Difficult to say what it could be, you might just need to lubricate the window guides....The best thing would be to remove the door panel so you can locate where the noise is coming from.

Yea I suppose that'd be the best thing to do really.

Its easy enough to remove the panel, you need to remove the electric mirror control switch (or blanking plate on the passenger side) and remove the screw behind, then remove the plastic circular screw cover from behind the door handle and remove the screw. You should then be able to unclip the fasteners from around the edge of the panel and pull upward and outwards at the same time to release the other clips (be careful not to pull to hard as the door handle cable will still be attached). I would normally suggest following the instructions on bmwe34.net to remove the panel but they are not correct (does not mention the 2 screws).

Squeal like a ........

I've the same squeal from my drivers window, other 3 windows are fine.
Squeal starts when the window is down 1", and keeps getting louder until about halfway open, then is OK.

It does seem to have gotten worse over the last few weeks.

This car is starting to drive me nuts.

I don't like the 'clunk' when the windows fully open.
A 'soft' landing would be better.

I didn't get the squeal, but I did get the clunk & slow motion opening which happened for a couple of weeks before the clunk was followed by the more ominous sound of the glass falling to the bottom of the door!  (why do these sort of things happen just as you're starting a long motorway run?)

The two little X shaped white plastic jobbies that fit onto the bottom of the glass and connect to the motor arm via a ball joint seem to become brittle with age. The ball joint then cracks causing the window to become slightly misaligned - slow or squeaky running.

If this is your problem change BOTH of the plastic bits, I didn't..... but have had to now. While you've the glass out it's a good time to squirt some lubricant into the window runners too.

I had this on my 530. I replaced the rubber strips, both inner and outer at the top of the door frame that act as weather proofing for the window glass. They have a coating on them which wears off after time and causes the rubber to squeal against the glass as it moves downwards. Especially on hot days.

Hope this helps

I had the same squealing problem while lowering the drivers side window back afew months ago (and the odd thump from in htere while cornering at speed), so I carefully removed the door panel (its held on with 6 philips screw heads, some of which are concealed under the doorhandle and some plastic moulding), I hadn't the plastic pulled back two minutes when out jumped a leprechaun!
