Having just bought my first BMW (a 520i se Touring '92) Iam as you would expect attempting to get all the glitches sorted asap. In the last 3 days I have identified 1 major fault ( worn drive shaft coupling which my local specialist is sorting for £100 ) and several smaller probs including the air con not working, which I am assured by the local specialist (who did a thorough check and service after I bought the car) just needs a recharge?? but more annoyingly this mystical opening rear tailgate window which I have heard so much about doesn't open has anyone got any ideas??

By the way I love the car despite the faults and can't wait to get it sorted.

Cheers Spanner

Hi,

Can you hear the locking motor operate when you press the glass release button? If you can open the tailgate part way and press the glass release button whilst pulling up on the wiper assy or press from behind around the glass lock area, mine has had the locking spindle misadjusted/ loosened and the metal plate had sheared. This is how I got mine open - it was a real pig. I hope this makes sense. It did take about 30 mins and alot of messing with.

On the aircon situation, how long has it been without gas for? you have to be careful as the seals can dry out etc... I had mine tested earlier this week and have been told that the condenser has a massive leak - least of my problems at the moment.

It will get sorted

I had to replace the condensor on my car (had a big split in it) the cheapest place to source a replacement is GSF car parts, i paid just over £100. If the system had been low on gas for a while it is best to have the whole system evacuated and the correct amount of refrigerant (by weight) added back in.
