Wife has recently taken delivery of 99 523i Se, after driving the car for a few weeks she has gone and bumped a kerb which appears to have resulted in the electrical system having some kind of fit.  Firstly the ABS and EBD light now stays on, the car is no longer adding miles to the mileometer so as a result her trip shows she is steadly decreasing her miles per gallon.  Plus the speedometer packed up.  So much for quality.  For all this to happen at the same time as the bump I can only conclude that the two are related.  Anybody have any ideas before I take it to the garage and have my legs removed.  PS Also a garage recomendation close to Leeds/Wakefield, West Yorks would be Nice.

Sounds like either the wiring to the speed sensor has broken or the sensor itself has broken, not sure where it is on the E39 but it is mounted on the differential on the E34.

n/s/r abs sensor sends the signal for the speedo, sounds like a faulty sensor. is quite common.
