Topic: A tourer with what Posted: 15-February-2005 at 16:20 |
Someone stated in an earlier thread that they owned a 1.6i tourer. I thought the 1.8i engine was the smallest size engine for the tourer. I was pondering over this as I own a 318i tourer and a 316i saloon. Now the 1.8 engine has a duff cylinder with a low compression reading of 100psi and I thought of taking the 1.6 engine out of the saloon and dropping that in. Great for cheaper insurance with only a small drop in performance. Then I was thinking in my daydreamy way of thinking how I would have to explain to the insurance broker how I have a tourer with a 1.6 engine and not a 1.8 and dipite being the same type engine would they classify this as a modification.
Mind you I might just keep the saloon its got a few more dents but the paintwork is good.

Personally i would not fit a smaller engine to the car. You can pick up 318i engines for cheap monies, or even put in a 318iS engine...
316 Tourers were made 1991-1994

OOoo dont tempt me with the 1.8is engine. Lovely but the chance of picking up these cheap I don't think.
The reason I would put the 1.6 engine in is for economics. I already own the engine so it is not going to cost anything. Getting a 1.8 engine is still going to cost me 200 at least, thats against the rules of bangernomics.

I'm ready to be slapped down here, but I thought the 1.6 was actually a detuned 1.8
The same was as a 318 can actually be a 4 pot 2.0 litre

I have a 1992 316i touring. It's not fast but I still overtake most things, given a bit of clear road!
The 1.6 and 1.8 versions of the M40 are identical apart from the bore, and the ECU, so far as I know. There's only 10 bhp difference.
The M10 engine is different, and there were detuned 1.8 engines that were badged as 316.
I don't think the touring was availble with the M10 engine, so your swap should be straight forward. The 318is swap, although possible, is not as simple as the engine management is quite different with 4 coils.

I thought there was the:-
316i = 1600
318i = 1800
In Germany 316 is 1800 Carb, 318i is 1800 fuel injection

Early 316's were 1800 carb engine's, they were replaced in 1988 with the 316i and 318i M40 engined cars.

It would seem not as my '93 316 Lux Touring has (or had) the wheels but not the obc or headrests.
I agree about it being spritely - much quicker than I thought it would be. Downside is it's a bit noisey if you're tanking on & it drinks like a Geordie on a Friday night. ![](smileys/beerchug.gif)
Doubt if there'd be much difference insurance-wise between a 316 & 318.
My daydream is to fit a 2.0d enginge - 150bhp, chipped to 190bhp with 253lb/ft torque. Enough to scare E30 M3's !
