Yikes... will the clutch not hook up at all? Slipping the clutch like that will make it so bad that it won't be drivable. Once that happens it is a PITA.

Economy run. Thats sounds like good fun. Driving around like a granny.
Might let my granny drive my car then, so I can win. Can I use my brother-
in-laws 5.7 litre V8 Dodge Ram? (12MPG normally, 2.6 GPM driving fast)

They are good fun in fairness.
I have done a few now and think my first was the best (in my old E30). With no navigator I had to follow the directions and drive at the smae time and still managed to win a prize (for being fastest )!

There is usually a break for lunch with something car related thrown in (no pressure Diarmuid)

Hi guys,

I might run in this depending on the date. I ran a few Economy runs when I was in the MG car club. So it would be a nice change to run in it instead of sitting out in the country with a clip board.

Any dates yet?

Mick

Cheers
Mick

As noted in the Irish region news BMW Car Club Magazine April 2006

"Mid West Tour May 21st 11am at Killaloe in Co. Clare is the kick off for a planned tour of the area. An optional economy competition may be held. Contact Gerard O'Connor on 086 2659211 or Diarmuid Mallon for more details."

More Details: The Meeting point at 11am is in Ballina Co. Tipperary (don't panic! not really a change of start, meeting point is just the other side of the bridge over the river Shannon.) If you come up from the N7 into Ballina/Killaloe Turn into the car park on the left, sign posted Swimming Pool, just after the 50km/h sign.

The route is about 90miles doing a full circle of Lough Derg with a lunch halt just after half way. There is plenty of spectacular scenery on the route. All roads are good secondary roads, no back roads

As well as the Economy Competition, there will also be a few Treasure Hunt type questions throw in.

Please note 11am is the time for first car on the route. Please be there in good time to allow for documentation and tank filling.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

2 hours from Frank Keane's, so no excuses for all you city boys not travelling down!  In Kin's case, bearing in mind his recent brushes with the law, allow 2.5 hours!

While we had a low turnout for this event last year it was an enjoyable day.  The format on the day will combine the treasure hunt, economy run and as such is more challenging than you would think.  It also includes reasonably challenging route notes and requires maintaining as close as possible to the calculated journey time and average speed.

There is a handicap system that will even out the difference of engine size, etc. between cars.  If I recall correctly it meant that a '03 M3 nearly beat an e36 318iS in the results and Adrian romped home in his 523i.

As Ger said, the first car will leave at 11:00 on the day, so if people could aim to gather by 10:30 to sign in and get their instructions, etc. it would be great.

For those who don't know the area, Ballina is the Tipperary side of the town of Killaloe at the southern end of Lough Derg on the Shannon.  The meeting point is the car park on the way in to Ballina from the N7.  It is on the left hand side just inside the 50kph zone (note to Kin!!).  If you pass a pub called Goosers (on the right hand side) you have gone a little too far.

There will be a lunch stop in Portumna at the end of the outward leg and the finishing point is the same carpark we will be starting from.

Let me know if you can make it and I will be able to pass on more explicit directions, etc. as needed.
