On and off for some time now I have noticed a judder from the clutch. It only tends to happen when letting the clutch out slowly i.e. in slow traffic or from standstill at a junction. The amount of judder has increased over the last couple of weeks although it still only happens once every 2-3 journeys (10-15 miles) I'm thinking the clutch may be on it's way out so here's the thing;
I'd love to able to afford a genuine BMW one as being in the trade, I know of many customers who have gloated at getting a half price clutch then come back with tail between the legs 6 months later! However I'm sure there must be an OE make that is half the price but still the quality? Has anyone bought a non-genuine clutch they've been happy with and if so, what make and where from? Many thanks Mike |

I think Sachs clutch is factory fitted but its seems to have the same price here in Sweden in a private sparepartshop as BMW has.
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E34/Touring/Europe/540i-M6 0/RHD/M/1996/january/browse/clutch/ Note if you notice the the clutch slips, change it directly otherwise you burn the flywheel very easy and you have more then double coust fore clutchchange. Some times at some bigger BMW club Schweden meetings, BMW have 20% fore spareparts, next time I should buy me a clutch. It have passed 200.000 km last summer) Last time i buy rubbermounting to the engine. (Just change 4 17" tyres on the 540T so the "hobbywallet" is a little empty at the moment ![]() Edited by Hasso |

The BMW part number for the 3piece kit is:
21 21 1 223 633 - this is listed as 265mm --- Equiv Kits are: Sachs 3000 832 601 - 265mm Valeo 826737 - 266mm LuK 627 2250 00 - 270mm --- As the Sachs kit matches the size of BMW kit, it's most likely that Sachs is the OEM supplier. However, Valeo & LuK are quality stuff too. I'd buy whichever of the four was the cheapest... I've had cases recently where customers went and bought an aftermarket clutch and it was actually more expensive than BMW so price BMW first. Kind Regards, Eddie. Edited by bmwcare |

Well thankfully I have no slip at all yet and I can accelerate fairly hard from standstill without getting any slip or judder. I just feel as though it may be ever so slightly warped perhaps, potentially rear main leaking too as suggested on my last MOT but not 100% sure though I'll do it at the same time, may as well if gearbox is out.
Thanks for the info Eddie, if you are happy the after market cutches are ok then that's good enough for me! Don't worry, I ALWAYS price main dealer first. Working in one, I know how people can be disillusioned by dealer prices and it's a common misconception that they are laways the more expensive. Cheers Mike |

I suggest ringing Motormec and asking them - they are my preferred oem supplier and have never got it wrong.

Hi Mike,
Just went searching for clutch/flywheel and this thread popped up and it looks pretty recent too! I've been pondering the old clutch change too and I have it on good authority that the LUK clutch is a worthy replacement and is indeed a quality part. I can get it from Eurocarparts for about £200 through my friendly mechanic so was going to do that, however, I now have another dilemma...! The flywheel! I was searching flywheel to see if anyone had discussed the same topic, only regarding flywheels as well as clutches. I just had a slight 'incident' and I reckon it's time to replace my flywheel but whilst I have not put anything on the car since nearly 3 years ago that isn't genuine BMW I'm not sure I can foot the £1400 bill for the BMW parts (that was with discount, apparently). Because they are dual-mass, I gather they are worth getting right, as a cheap one is just going to cause problems or just break. No £300 ones from Ebay then.... But if anyone has any experience with the flywheels on these cars then I'd very much like to learn more about it! In answer to your question though, Mike, the cheapest clutch I could find that was the best price is the LUK clutch from Eurocarparts. I searched for several months before coming up with that decision and I have been told many times that it's the best choice if you don't go OEM. (Plus, as already said, Sachs is the OEM one). |
