Okey Dokey Smarty Pants try this one
A farmer had a stone that he used to measure grain on his scale. One day his neighbour borrowed the stone, and when he returned, it was broken into four pieces. The neighbour was very apologetic, but the farmer thanked the neighbour for doing him a big favour. The farmer said that now he can measure his grain in one pound increments starting at one pound all the way to forty pounds using these four stones.
How much do the four stones weigh? |

Reckon each of the stones must be something akin to: - one pound - two pounds - three pounds - four pounds. Add the four fragments together - you get 10 pounds total. The farmer can then measure out using combinations of each of the four, e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 4+1, 4+2, etc. Hmmm, I can feel my theory beginning to slip away from me AAARRRGGGGHHHHH! I must've been really bored to have even tried to solve this puzzle Edited by Horsetan |

I was thinking more like 2,3,5&10. It's got to be able to weigh from 1-40, so if you put the 2 on one side and the 3 on the other you could weigh one, they add up to 20 so do it twice and you get 40. Not sure if it works all the way though.

You've given a total weight, not individual weights. The combination individual weights allow for the range from 1 to 40 Pounds. So what are the weights of each stone? It isn't so obvious as you will soon discover...Hah hahahahahaha hic! |

Your son is correct. However, can he justify how he came up with those figures (apart from showing you the web page with the answer on it.)
