It goes like this.........

The last Mark 2 Jaguar was made in 1969. Twenty
years later, they were worth a fortune and still are.
Sadly, no BMW saloon made in the sixties is really
worth more than a couple of Grand. The newest E23
is now 19 years old, the oldest is 28 years old. If they
were going to rise in value, they would have done so
by now. In ten years time, a nice one will still be
worth £1000 because they will never be fasionable
in the way an old Jag or Merc is. For whatever
reason, there are very few old BMW's that are
serious collectors items (i.e worth more than
£25'000 in top condition)- of the postwar stuff it's the
507, CSL, M1 and, er......that's it really.

Mercedes Benz on the other hand is different.
Whereas most seventies and eighties BMW saloons
are pretty worthless, similar aged Merc stuff always
has a value. It's not that Mercs are vastly better cars -
often they're a load of crap (C Class) - but for some
reason the percieved value of an old BMW is vastly
less.

Some are better made. The E30 was always a bit of
a rust heap but the 190E seems to last a lot longer.
A classic case is the old 6 Series. Most BMW
breakers will have them piled up and I've seen loads
in ordinary scrapyards, dumped in side streets etc.
These were the same price as the W107 SL which
even in rough condition (and boy, they can REALLY
rot) will still command £4000 and you'd be lucky to
find one of those on the back of a scrap truck.

The old 6 Series is like the Jaguar XJS, Opel Monza
etc - they will have a loyal following and curiosity
value but will never be really, really valuable in the
same way the old CS Coupe isn't particularly sought
after 30 years after the last one was made.

I wonder why this is?

its a true tale unfortunally andy boy is right. e23 or any bmw will always play second fiddle to the more desirable cars. theres only perhaps a handfull of people who like the e23 and they are all on this site. if i dident aquire my e23 when i did, and it needed restoring i wouldent bother. dont get me wrong, i think the car is well made for its time but why have a car like this when there were more interesting models around. but saying all of this i will keep this model on the basis that i LIKE IT. but for everyday driving i wouldent choose it. i would have a modern car in todays driving conditions.

majority of people don't buy an old car to use on a daily basis, but that doesn't meant they can't be used that way, after all, the options you thought were desirable then and were expensive back in the 80's, majority of basic cars have them as std today.
Lets not get into a 'knock the e23' ala the old 7 board, as each to their own. I personally dislike the majority of 80's Mercedes, as to me they are old 'manish' quite boring and just as bland as some of the mainstream BMW's of the same period. The only one I would like would be a 2.5 evo 190, but as it is so far out of my reach, I don't bother even thinking about it. Jags rust as badly as any other car, and the Senator/Monza etc, nice cars, but to me that's all!

Well I used an E23 as an everday car - in fact,
several. The first one was a T reg 728 auto which I
used day in day out in all weathers. 16 mpg made it
very expensive though. But that was 7 or 8 years ago
and today, very few of them will stand up to 1000
miles a week use. It would just be a constant battle.
As for Mercs; a gloss black 560SEL (87-91) with
original alloys in mint condition still looks good and
is a very impressive car. A gold 280SE with chrome
arches and velour trim doesn't, and isn't.
A Jaguar XJ12, as a weekend car, beats both of
them hands down - probably the best saloon car
ever made. An E23 felt like a big Cortina after an XJ
and the later XJ40 was just a piece of rubbish that
never recaptured the waft appeal of the old Series
111.

The way I look at it, is they ALL rust.
Still as long as whoever buys an e23, enjoys their purchase then that's all that matters, that's the way I look at it.
No need to get your coat Rob!

some great posts guys. This chat board would be VERY boring if it was just a small clique of cronies all agreeing with each other, like a mutual admiration society.

andyboy - someone once said an E3 is a very well made and engineered Ford Consul, and I laughed and agreed. the E23 is a big Cortina, with simple RWD engineering, well screwed together, and late high spec models have some nice toys.

andyboy - totally agree with you re the XJ40 vs the Ser III XJ....what the hell did Jim Randle & his team do to the Jaguar marque?

AG - totally agree with you, the E23 slagging got boring on the old register so lets all accept that E23 fans a just a few old nutters, harmless nutters. its cruel to larf at nutters.

Robs - how is your E23 coming along?

keep the lively comments coming guys.

hi philip,i managed to save and repair the front offside wing, its taken 3 weekends to do it but today its sprayed and finished. that was a chore,i thought id done it last weekend but ended up stripping the paint off again as the clear laqure reacted with the paint after 2 hours. so i went out and bought some different make of laqure and it worked a treet. i also think i mixed the last lot with to much hardener.i will be putting the parts back this week and should have it on the road when the bad weather has gone, ie no salt. did you get your blue 735 back from the repair shop. how does it drive, have you got any pics. rob..

Mark - are you selling an E30? lets hear some details with pics.

you show tremendous class being into E23's at the tender age of 20 when most lads your age want a Chavved up Nova with cruising lights underneath, and 1000 watts of crap music blasting out.

Rob - sounds like you are making solid progress. she will be ready to show off soon.

I started cleaning the blue 735i today, its still very much work in progress. I started cleaning the engine bay and will gradually clean the car from front to back. pics very shortly  rain, gales & snow are ideal car valeting weather boys

Mark,

you can't post pics direct to the board. you must host your pics elsewhere on the Net, then post a link to the pic on the board.

I use Yahoo Geocities. you have to pay a monthly fee

AG uses a free pic hosting service.
