The revenue are fully entitled to charge the taxes they wish as there is no EU control over them

Well that's being discuss as many EU member states feel like it's an illegal tax!

Unfortunately as noone, apart from us can gain anything from it, I don't expect anything to happen soon!

VRT is a misnomer if you ask me and should be named VVT - because it is after all a "vehicle value tax".

Shouldn't VRT cost the same whether your vehicle is worth �3000 or �30000? It takes the same amount of time to register every vehicle so why should it cost more to do one than the other? Is is just me or is this illegal?

Forget VRT. Why isn't car tax based on the amount mileage you do as opposed to the size of your engine.

You do 30,000 a year no matter what size engine you pay a rate of say 2% after all you are using the roads more 600 Quid

You do 5,000 a year you pay 2% smaller amount, but you have not used the roads as much. 100 quid

In other words you for what you use, seems very fair to me.

I'm guessing your total annual mieage is reasonably low??!

I do 20-25k miles per year between 2 * 2.5 litre cars. So, for me, either way is just a different approach to proctology.

Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93.

Car is on the Limerick side of Buttevant about half a mile from the town . House on the left . It's an 89 2 door , zinnobar red with 17inch rims and tinted windows . Body is dentless but it does need a touch of Ferecla to bring the paint to life again . Small bit of rust at the drivers side A-pillar . Engine is not running and the chap reckons it's a head gasket job (?) It's got a sunroof and a set of MAX POwer seat covers . AC Schnitzer sticker on the window .

Dennis Sexton is the lads name , 0872442779 .

A guy took on revenue years back stating it was a tax on a tax, but lost. Grounds may have been that if he had won, then the state would have been brought to court by every person to have ever paid VRT, and on precedent would have lost them all and had to refund them all, which would have crippled the country.

The next time you're bringing a car in, log on to www.revenue.ie and click the VRT calculator. This will give you an idea of the cost of the VRT you'll have to pay; however, this is not hard and fast. It will also give you an idea of the OMSP.

i used the online v.r.t calculater before i went over for the car.there was no listing for a 1985 323i conv.

here is what i calculated:

1985 320i conv=�350

1986 325i conv=�600

1985 323i saloon=�400

prices are not accurate as i cant remember exactly but they are within �30 accuracy.

based on the prices above i figured i would have to pay about �500.

well i was wrong.

their O.M.S.P are very innacurate.if i went by their prices id have two 1993 325i conv for the same price as what they value my car.
