Hang on a minute - both 'Phillip' and 'Hiabboy' have
got good clean E23's for sale for £400 or less. I think
that's the obvious answer, a ready to drive car for a
few quid. Don't get too sentimental.......
As far as I was aware, the 3 speed autos like I had in
my 733i were better than the 4 speed for reliability.
Trouble is though, they are all now so old you may
struggle to find another one. I'm probably wrong but
didn't E23's go to the 4 speed autobox in '82 with the
facelift grille?
But I know what you mean - Henna red Sharknose
E23's do look quite special
All it needs is a 5 speed dogleg manual!

Good points, some hard thinking tonight, I fear you are right on the
hard to fined 3 sp box, on the last mk1 sharks it was an opshion for
the 4 sp box I think. Mine is one off the very last mk1 e23s first reg
in Aug 82
All it needs is a 5 speed dogleg manual! yes plese

How hard would it be to convert it to manual? Apart from the obvious need for the pedal box/gearbox and internal trim, would it need a different ECU?
Mark, shame it's gone, can the likes of Fritz's bits help at all?

It would probably need a different driveshaft as well....

So quite a conversion! Mark, it would probably cost you £350/400 to get it all sorted, how about Hiabboy's 735. Sounds a really nice car!

Hi Mark. VJ was indeed bombing down the Tonbridge bypass on sunday. did you see the bootlid bouncing up & down? the push button is a bit sticky & sometimes doesn't engage the lock. some geeza told me about it in Halfords carpark, Newhaven later that morning. I need industrial quantities of Driveway Oil Stain Remover as I have a fleet of vintage M30 motors all dripping away in unison.
So sorry to hear about the Red Baron. Think hard before committing ££££ to repairs.
The geeza who bid on my 732i has gone to ground, sensible chap. so if you want a ready to go E23 for the summer while you search for a g/box for the Baron let me know. one of us will buy it back off you when you've sorted the Baron.

mark philips car he had for sale is brill, exellent car.i saw this yesterday. might be a thought to take philip up on the offer, as he said it would be bought back by one of us. that then gives you time to sorce a gearbox plus anything else you decide to do to it. also gives you time to get money together etc.

Thanks Rob. my 732i is nowhere near as good as the Bahama Babe, but Rob reckons it can easily be improved without spending too much £££££.
It would be nice to keep my 732i in the family. one of us is sure to need an e23 runabout at some stage.

Mark since you drive a discovery and an e23 ,i'm sure you appreciate how important it is to have a car with a nice interior (for them long winter nights on the hard shoulder waiting for the AA!) . For this reason forget all them miser model 732Is with their poverty spec velour trim, what you need is my sapphire blue 735i SE with wipe down buffalo leather (handy for them ATF spills !) You could cruise (or park) in luxury until a box turns up for your turd.

Mark, is your box a 4 spd? Have you tried a flush and fluid change? These boxes normally do not just fail, get a bit jerky etc. How many miles has the car done? Any histiory of the box or clutch pack being replaced?

Patrick has a point there Mark, try having the fluids/filters etc changed/serviced, may give you some time.

Let me know as soon as you can Mark. If you want the 732i I will cancel the sale to the ebay chap. I will be gutted if the car goes to someone who doesn't look after it

OK Mark, let us know what the Brighton Auto Box people say.
I have a ZF torque converter which looks like a pumpkin, sitting around. its yours if you want it.
I have been approached by a new buyer for the 732i, so all is not lost.
