Thanks for your concern Chris, its much appreciated
I was looked after very well though, certainly won't complain. Not been for a 'blues & twos' run for a few years...hopefully not for another few either |

Moi???..I never get into trouble Chris
I won't be online til late at night for a while, under doctors orders to rest as much as I can do, got huge amounts of pills and inhalers to take..so will be rattling before long, no doubt. Was fun being taken to hospital in an ambulance with blues and twos going though..although at the time I have to admit I was a bit scared. |

LOL no I'll stick with the P4 for image & video editing! Just want a system to learn how to install and use *nix and maybe eventually configure it as an internet gateway, plus web & mail server at some point. I'd like to learn php and set up mysql on it too. Course, I havn't a notion where to begin with any of this! I also have an old P3 800 with 384Mb RAM which is only used for file storage, so I could try setting it up as a dual boot system. Will *nix run on an NTFS-formatted drive? |

If you had one of the 'light' distros such as ubuntu it would work.
Actually you could always try running knoppix on it to see if it will
support the gnome graphical interface. Knoppix is a downloadable
version of linux that you can burn to CD and use as a system recovery
tool when windows inevitably falls over. Stick it into your CD rom and
the system will auto boot from that. Good way of seeing if your system
could run it or not. I have heard of a P233 with 64MB RAM happily
running Suse before, so it may well run on your system. It all depends
what you want - I assume you won't be doing any sort of high res image
processing on that PC?!

do you need a decent spec pc to run Linux? I have an old P166 / 64Mb RAM lying idle (too slow for anything newer than Win98!)... would Linux it run on this?

Ooooh I remember the floppies! First PC was a P75 with 16MB ram and a
512MB hard drive, running windows 3.1 and MS Works. However, by far the
best aspect of that PC was Wolfenstein 3D! Great game.
This machine became my parents computer, I got a celeron 733 which was quite slow. Now have myself an AMD 2000 with 512MB RAM, GeForce FX5200 graphics and twin 80GB drives running Suse 9.2 - much better than Windows. Good system, I'm happy with it. |

I used to work in a PC store when those were still common on PC cases. Apparently it was supposed to allow you to slow down 386 / 486 DX2/DX4 processors which were double-speed. This would allow you run your old 286 programs. Course the button outlived the usefulness when Pentiums came along but some gullable foo... er.. respected clients thought they were impressive - you could add a few quid to the price of a Turbo-charged PC! How sad am I, still able to remember this stuff |

Ahhh the good ol' days C:\> Bad command or filename A mate of mine had an IBM 286 25 with Wolfenstein3D on it. It seemed so cutting edge back in 1989! My first PC was a Dell Dimension P90 8Mb RAM which I got back in 1995 when 486 DX4's still walked the earth. Needless to say it cost a heap and even upgrading to 16Mb RAM cost 500!! Was great for playing Descent, Doom, Quake and the classic Duke Nukem! and a slight improvement over the old Atari ST Got pretty handy with the DOS commands too and tweaking the autoexec.bat and config.sys files to squeeze the most out of the 640k conventional memory. Also remember the joy of loading all 11 Windows disks or even more fun all 25 MS Office floppies! |

think mine must have been W 3.1.. I know the computer had a turbo button... lol.
Had a DOS game called 'Mystic Towers' brill game, wonder if I can get it to work on this thing? At moment, got a custom made tower unit running a dual bios mother board (Gigabyte), an AMD 2000 chip and about 256meg of RAM and a 60 Gb H/D. Also got a Dell Lattitude C510, 384 Meg RAM 20 Gig H/D running am Intel celeron (don't like em) 1.2 GHz chip. Prefer Lappy, and Ally is borrowing the tower. |
