I know, it's frightening isn't it?
In the case of the E23, the house probably goes and
handles better.

Hmm, that's got me thinking............
"A desirable detatched* E23 set in a popular location
(Abacab Recycling) with all mod cons but requiring
some modernisation. Early viewing is strongly
recommended to appreciate the accomodation on
offer. Comes with it's own fully enclosing Paul Bracq
designed shed. No upward chain"

You can still be a car enthusiast and have aspirations as well as liking the e23, horses for courses (apologies Horsetan) at the end of the day.
So wether you like Jags, Mercs, Maxi's, Allegro's, or even a Daf, then you are still an enthusiast, in fact I'd say you're more of an enthusiast if you prefer a certain marque of a car (i.e. an e24 or e23) than if you want to go from one type to another in quick succession. In other words, you're a car enthusiast in general or an enthusiast of a particular type. I like the e24, but I prefer the e23, I'm not keen on the e32, I like the e38, wouldn't mind an e65 but an e23 is my preference.

I'm the opposite; never liked the E23 (looks like a five
minute job with a ruler and a picture of a 6 Series)
and I ****** abhor the E12 with a passion. The E32
was a massive step forward over the E23. I run one
as a daily banger - did 280 miles in it today to meet
the decorator to sort my new house out, set the
cruise at 90 all the way up and all the way back
again, averaged 28 mpg. On the way back dropped
in to see a mate and bought fout 15 inch BBS E34/32
wheels with newish Firestones for £25. The E32
does look like a bloated E34 and they only look okay
when they've been lowered (ditto E23). They are of
course a totally valueless old shed and an E34 parts
donor. I wouldn't say that I really loved my old 730i,
but I have to respect the 225'000 miles she's done.
I like the E38 much more - I'm waiting for one to
appear on Ebay with a blown autobox so that I can
do a manual conversion (don't do autos). Hmmm,
740i 4.4 with a six speed manual :-)

Personally I like all the 80's Beemers which is why I've owned a 520i & 528i. The fuel consumption of the 528i was awful though worse than my 735 auto!
How many of the mechanical parts can you use on an E23 from the next gen 7 series ?

Ebay can be comical, watched a few 635's recently as I like the "look" though don't actually want one, just curious what they fetch. Seen a 525e on several times, seller had £200 reserve, didn't get anywhere near it first time out when it was in fair condition, now with no MoT, off road for months and rust holes showing still asking same.
Maybe this 7 owner been reading Practical Classics price guide, quotes condition 3 (shed) as worth £450. Cars. like anything else, worth what someone will pay, whatever value you think they have.

Have to agree with you re 528i E28 fuel consumption. I have one and it definitely uses more gas than a 3.5 motronic E23. people tell me its due to overall gearing and less efficient fuel metering in the non-motronic 528i.
plenty of E23/E21/E28 era parts lived on well into the E34/E32/E36 era.

Ian T is right. It always amazes me what Price guides be it in PC or Parkers quote for nearly any car. They always seem to be way over the top. The same goes for private sellers. It's only when their car has spent weeks in the paper/autotrader/ebay etc unsold that they twig they may be being a bit optomistic. Anyway anyone want to buy a C reg E23 133k miles, a few electrical faults, a bit of rust, new seat covers from Argos, 11 months MOT £1500 no offers!

Porkers price guide more like.
Hey, I had a dream last night. I was back in my old
home town in Somerset (oooooaaaarrrggghh!!)
driving around in a D reg, manual gearbox 735i E23
in Platenengreen!
I'm not kidding you either, straight up. It's amazing
how detailed dreams can be.
Woke up, saw the E32 outside. Phhhhhhew!
Went to Hestercombe today, not bad. Anyone else?

Eh?
E34 has nothing in common with the E28. Different
body, interior, electrics, instruments, brakes,
suspension, axle, gearbox, engine, rad. Nothing
from an E28 fits an E34. Nothing from an E23 fits an
E32, even the block is different due to different
engine mount pick up points. The E36 is all different
again.
The one and only crossover is the 635CSi Highline
which used the E34/E32 engine.
Oh, and the BMW badges!
Yes, 528i's were crap on fuel. The M535i was better.

there are various small bits & pieces that fit later cars.
one example is Rear A/R bar links.
I just bought a pair for my E28 and the ETK listed all the models that they will fit, which included the e36. Maybe the ETK is wrong.

Could be the suppliers, Halfords list oil/air filters to fit a variety of models that the manufacters say aren't interchangeable, I looked up an E28 part (radiator)online on eurocarparts recently and found same part number shown for sevral other models. I suspect some of them are "rounding off" parts so they ae a "good enough" fit.

Hmmmm I was more interested in later car parts fiting earlyer cars as there a boat load of later 735is from the 86-90's era.
As for 635's I agree they are nice lookers but way over priced especially when you think body parts are almost impossible to get hold of, & altimatly they are BMW's idea of a Ford Capri, just a mid size saloon in drag!

The rad I was looking up was for a 528, and I'd been told a 535 would fit, it does, but from a later E34 model, may apply to 7's, have a look on ECP on;ine site and compare part no's.

Oh dear, just bought a 528 of ebay, was expecting to get 25mpg on a run and 10mpg less around town, are my expectations too high? It does have cruise control.

C/C on a 528 - that is v.rare - can we see pics or the ebay link Ian?
My 528i is an auto and does around 25 on a run, 18 on shorter runs. or 9 mpg if you run one mile & back!!
why don't you get a nice clean 732i, they do 30 on a run and 19 around town. I know a very nice one.
