Today the government will probably announce the privatisation of the
speed detection system. They hope to have about 600 blackspots
targetted and want the operators to concentrate on accident blackspots
and not so much on motorways/dual carriageways.
It is reckoned that in the first year €70million will be raised from the system! Now, what are they going to do about the real killers on the roads - incompetence, drink driving, etc.? |

Feck all i'd imagine, they'll no longer be interested in road safety now that they can get someone else to raise the revenue for them. Interesting statistics on Top Gear about speed cameras and road deaths. In areas where new speed cameras were placed, deaths were up and where no new cameras were placed, deaths had fallen. |

a lot to do with people slamming on the anchors when they find a speed trap they didnt know about! Putting the money into decent roads and overtaking lanes would drop road deaths in this country! |

True and True. But we have come along way, the fact of the matter is the taxes generated from car ownership are not being put back into the infrastructure but being spent on glorious projects like the NAC, Electronic voting etc. |
