I've been after a 540 manual for a while now but £3.8k seems like an extremely good deal...  What was the mileage and condition?

That's nothing. You can buy a P plate E38 for £3000
these days. I saw one on the trader and was
shocked.
Recently I bought an R reg 520i with a blown head
gasket for £1100. They're out there!

E38's are now into the £2K arena for the ones wishing to take on the risk, e39 at £3,800 seems outrageous VFM

Ironically, I think the manual 540s are the only ones to have.  If you want an auto, just get an E38 version, after all they're cheaper, bigger and better equiped.
