Go for it Richie..

I thought i might have to sell the M3 when i got the house, but so far so good.. And the M3 is not that dear to run as long as you steer clear of main dealers.And hunt round for the best deal on parts .yeah you get violated by the tax man but its worth it. For the performance you get the fuel economy is excellent. no probs running it every day. yeah parts wear out but they do in all cars, just get a good one to start with.. Ive done over 10k in mine since i got it and all i've replaced apart from routine servicing is track rod, rear top mounts and anti roll bar links.. ( oh and rear tyres but what can you do)these parts are no dearer than a 318is and just as likely to go in one of those.

Ritche - M3 is definitely more costly to run, excluding tyres, parts, services etc I was dropping almost 3k on tax and insurance. 

I weighed it up one day and with the state of the roads, traffic etc etc and increased mileage it had to go.  Hence why I now drive a P1ss rat estate TDI waering a balaclava, but I have to say its great cos I don't give a toss about it, I park it anywhere, people won't park beside me incase I ding their doors rather than it being the other way round.

Best of luck with the house hunting, max your monthly repayments and keep your term as short as possible - thats where the big savings are.

@Phil...I was on the M50 on Stephens Day alrite!! I had 2 people and luggage in the car so it could have been me. Around 3:30 or so in the afternoon???

Hey Richie, just something else to consider. The M3 is probably more reliable than you might expect, but these things were the equivalent of 75-80K back in 96/97, so it will cost the same to run now as it did back then - minus the dealer servicing, from personal experience they know not what they do on the older cars.
I've done 14K miles in 15 months, I've dropped just under 5K into it excluding petrol, which is about 50Euro for 250'ish miles and including 2 big services, I'm also expecting more bad news next week after the clutch is replaced - as the driveshaft is making funny noises. These are the surprises that can cost a grand at a time. If you're trying to budget your outgoings, any old car especially a high performance one will make a fool out of you.
As for the driving eperience, Ken is right about the refinement and quality, but the E36 M3 is a much more excitable drive than any E46, the E46 M3 is bettter all round, but it just didn't get the juices flowing when I had one out for a test drive, I was expecting more from the hype.
Just don't get yourself all screwed up financially over a car. Believe me, when you pull your first beer out of your own fridge, it'll be worth it.

Tell me about it, new clutch next week on the M3 and the Alfa has been off the road since middle of Dec, spent 1,500 Euro on it with service, T-belt and suspension bits and then they found the subframe had broken - another 2K to get it going again, being fitted on Monday. Up to then it had been running like a dream the past 4 yrs, but parts are ridiculously expensive and made of chocolate. (bad word after Christmas)

To be honest, I'm thoroughly depressed everytime I take the beer from my fridge, knowing I could be living at home with a brand new M3 instead of my 2 bed duplex... but horses for courses :D
