That's the trouble though, tastefull is in the eye of the beholder.

I've never ever heard someone say that an Alpina wasn't tasteful.

Some of the Alpinas from the 70s and 80s were far from tasteful. Very bright colours and stupid graphics.

Like I said tasteful depends on who's looking

In fact here are some, IMHO, less than tastefull Alpinas:

Horroble alloys, horrible front splitter and horrible graphics.

The 70s was a tastless decade and these two are just typical.

The last one is by far the least bad, but that front bumper looks poo as do the naff gold graphics

I'm sure someone will disagree but then like I said beauty is in the eye of the beholder

The alpina style graphics just look a bit naff on all apart from the late seventies and early eighties stuff like the E21, E12, E28 etc. All the later cars just don't suit it somehow.

They just look so 70's. The graphics really make the car look dated IMO.

Spokey, why make your car look like something it's not?

Isn't that the same as putting an M3 badge on a 318?

Who says I'm just doing the graphics? You can still get a lot of the real Alpina bits, and I'm watching ebay all the time for engines and transmissions.

An E21 looks like it's from the seventies anyway (probably because it is), adding the graphics adds something to the car if you ask me.

The Alpina stripes resemble individuality and distictivness, does the 3.0 CSL with the "M" stripes on it look ugly/dated, IMO no, more classic and a signal of its potential, likewise for the Alpina cars these arn't just another 3,5,7,X...series on the road. ultimately they are an option for the new buyer. Each to there own. I say yes to stripes, but no to "Lexus" lights, unless its a Lexus!

However a good design doesn't date. The E21 is quite a dated design but the alpina graphics just make it so much more so.

I saw an old 6 series today and it still looked fresh. However if you'd stuck a silly alipna bodykit and some naff stripes on it would have instantly made it look dated.

Sure alpina's are more individual than standard BMWs, but that doesn't make them stylish. BMW could do a limited run of 100 3 series with whale tail spoilers, 20" alloys, red crushed velvet seats and neons. They would be individual and rare but not stylish.

I respect Alpina cars but if I wanted a faster BM I would get an M car. Alpinas are IMO visualy just a bit tacky

Hmmm, I see your point Peter. I do like E24s very much, and I remember the abomination that Hammond created on Top Gear when he painted the white 635 up with blue and red stripes. Now that was bad taste.

And as for that hideous spangly chav-tastic E36......

So why call it an M3 in the auction title then?

Of course. How silly of me. Are they actually M-Sport alloys though?

Logic at its finest - 'Has M-Sport (sic) alloys, so becomes an M3 by association'.

Ah, but which came first? BMW Z1, designed in 1987, Mazda MX-5 designed in 1989. So the Mazda copied the Z1. The Z1 looks fantastic IMO.

She really looks and drives superb and turns heads and gets noticed wherever you go. Be prepared for people stopping you to take photos, it happens to me all the time.

Turns heads..nae wunder pal...People yelling and taking pics...thats to give to the style police

If I was to see that car at a glance..i'd swear I thought it was a vectra!!!

Now each to their own but silly money spent and end up looking like that to me is a waste.

MX-5 vs Z1...iconic maza wins hands down, not taking anything away from Z1's cos it opened the doors for the hot selling 3's and 4's.

Alpina...engineered to high standards, nicest ones seen yet, one in gaydon and Mr Perrys holds its own as well. Looks on some are a bit tacky especially with stripes and all that pi$h. But then again, AC schnitz cars with stripes are a bit of an eye sore as well. Any car today for that matter with stripes is so old skool..
