well...would you rather me say that Z1 is a sack of s**t...obsviously not cos it aint but in comparsion to mx-5 it is.
My words should've been"...cos it paved the way for the eventual Z3 and Z4 |

Hardly. MX5 was designed with the help of IAD, a British design house, using the original Lotus Elan as its inspiration. Mazda's design team made a point of trying to re-create the spirit of the Elan, right down to the exhaust note, but with far more reliability than the Lotus ever had. They succeeded - and how. In 1989, the first UK ones came on the market at 14,295. Even now, those early ones are unmistakeable and still work for a living. The rest is history. |

The MX-5 is a fantastic piece of design, and I'm sure they in no way drew inspiration from the Z1 (where are the drop down doors for instance?), but it just lacks something. I've driven one and it's a great laugh, but for my money I like cars with a bit of personality, a bit of soul. Which is why I'd hand over my folding for a Z1 before an MX-5.
