Hi Nick,

Yes the 840 is a great long distance cruiser, on the highway I get 10L/100km and it has a 90L tank.

The late model 840Ci you suggest is a good pick.  Alot of information of what to look for and pre purchase info is available here:

I've been missing my M5... I sold it some time back and have been swaning around in 525, ok but not setting the world alight. I have now decided that the long in the tooth 525 is going to be replaced bu either an M5, Alpina B10, or 840.

I'm in centreal London so the M5 won't like it much, the last one didn't and neither did my left leg. So, B10 / 840 both autos. Well, the B10 is nice but the 840 has a certain x appeal. I think I need this car for a while its just so .... well !

So, 840, a good long distance cruser. Great looks. Now for a few questions to you experts out there. What should I be looking for? My mind is a 98/99 with the steptronic auto box which I think was the last itteration of the mods. Does anybody know what they do to the gallon? And, are there any pit falls with this car, known problems?

Looking forward to some advice.
