Good evening, i have posted this in the 5 series forum but i wanted everyone to be aware esp if you love your BMW as much as i love mine....

just thought i would post about my recent "chipsaway" experiance in hope that you can learn from my mistakes...i appreciate that my local guy may be a lot worse than yours but if you live in south bristol beware..... my local guy turned up and bearing in mind they "only paint the damaged area to uphold the original finish" i now have a poorly sprayed (bodged) up nsf wing, nsf door and half of the rear nsf door, the finish is as dull as anything and was damaged by the chipsaway guy when he polished up the new paint with an orbitial polisher... which i pointed out to him but he told me he "couldnt see it from where he was standing" the paint colour is very nice but its about as close to artic silver as dolphin grey it looks awful and has a very dull finish there is overspray everywhere including bonnet, front bumper, roof, windscreen, door handles, side indicator, trim pieces (the ones that just unclip) and on the top edge of the rear door i even have spots of primer... the paint finish is very patchy i pointed this out to the guy who said after five days give a polish and it will be fine - i wish i spent an hour polishing on saturday and it made no differance except the rest of the car is extremely shiney and makes the c**p job stand out even more, its awful to the point of my mrs who knows absolutly nothing about paint finishes saying that i had paid to have my pride and joy vanalised..
and the real insult is that the stone chips on the bonnet he couldnt do because he could remove the prevouis owners touch up paint (that was a better match than his) which was why i called him out in the first place ....
this cost Ł250,00, i have a qoute of Ł550 from my local bodyshop who in fairness are very very good to set it all right, all i wanted was the damage sorted and to keep it as original as possible  clearley i should have saved  my Ł250 and gone striaght to the body shop

i wouldnt dream of letting this happen to another fellow bmw enthusiast (spelling) and you feeling the way i do at the moment ...

sorry guys rant over

beware

regards a very angry

chaz

I would have thought the chpisaway guy should have tested the paint in an inconspicuous area of the car for a colour match, then proceeded to do the paintwork if it matched.

Agree with Rhys, give Trading Standards a call..check out their website for your local area number:

Contact their head office and let them know how bad the job was done, also inform them that you are a member of several internet forums. You could also say that you are a member of Which magazine (works for me).

hi, chazzer, just a read this post i was going to ring my local chips away guy to do some touch ups, but now i am abit hesitent. There loss as most of there work works on word of mouth.#

Dont forget chazzer these chips away guys are only franchise companies, and technically still have a boss to answer to as its a big money making name at stake.

Did you feel that you could not pay the guy after you realised it was a bodge job. and also did he not agree that it was a bad job, if he didnt then he should not be working for the franchise and im sure that the "head office" would be interested to know.

Have you taken any pictures of it for evidence? sorry for the rant as well but people like that get rite up by nose

cheers

Well guys spoke to head office today told them how i couldnt believe what a mess he had made of it and so much for just painting the damaged area etc overspray just being the icing on the cake ...  her words were "i cant understand why as he has had the training" anyway mateybob form chips away has agreed to come out and re-do the the work (well lets face it he cant make it worse....can he  ???) even though i am not to keen on letting him lose on it again... but if i am still not happy then it can be re-done again at a bodyshop at his expense which is furry muff, i do have some pictures but non that throughly illustrate the devastation left by him

the saga continues ...

he said to me today that he knew it was going to be patchy after drying out , so why did he tell me otherwise ?? i cant really discribe what i felt when i realised how sh*te the job was ... i just felt guted but at the time re-assured that some polish and a few days all will be fine so like a complete mug paid him and it bit me i the ass

glad you can see some light at the end of the tunnel mate

let us know the outcome, im surprised if they have not said to you "please do not tell anyone"!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have lost my confidence anyway, you can tell them from me, and if i did get them to the job i shall not be paying them until its dried and im happy. I take it this was the guy from Bristol?

Good luck mate

Chaz, you have my utmost sympathy. It made my blood boil just reading your experience. Whatever you do, do not let him get away with spoiling your pride and joy! If they mess it up second time around, tell them you want them to pay for a proper job to be done at a bodyshop. If they don't agree, tell them you'll go to trading standards and maybe even the local newspaper and post it on the many forums you are a member of (honest John website is fantastic for this kind of thing, lots of complaints are listed on here, you may not be the first)

Don't let it lie, you are a consumer with rights and trading standards do come down hard on those who dare to con customers and if you are not the first to complain, they'll be very interested. A friend of mine has contacted them before, they contacted the company in question, he got a swift re-fund and they offered him an extra settlement before he even mentioned court! Worth considering but if they are smart, they'd probably sort it out if you so much as mentioned trading standards!

Go for it and good luck. Let us know how you get on

Mike

My best friend is coming out again on the second of november to "try again" if he balls it up which im sure he will, its of to bmw, and i have also stated any parts he cant get his overspray off from last time will be replaced at his expense and this time it would be nice if he covered the rest of the car so it doesnt get covered in over spray...

will keep you guys posted

Good luck Chazzer!  At least you know you'll get it done right in the end..which is more than I can say regarding 'Chips Away!

The 'Chips Away' guy in the Scottish Borders doesn't even answer or return calls..I've phoned on three separate occassions without reply over the last three months to get some dents taken out of the BM..

He's just had a nice writeup in the local rag, which puts him and his other half up there, when in reality, they are way down in my rankings with BAD communication skills and downright ignorance!

Chips Away, no way! [rant over]

Well just been to the bmw approved bodyshop today, there are sorting out a written quote for me, and have said that eanything that cant be cleaned up will be replaced, i did for-warn them he was having another go on thursday, they told me not to get my hopes up and that i would see them soon ....they obviously have had other victims of chipsaway in .... he told me really then only do stone chips and they arent as good as everyone thinks at that  and that he should never attempted to spray half the side of the car....

still learning ....

Which Chipsaway was he Chazzer....Bristol or further afield?

In some form of defence I used Chipsaway in Wellingborough (not much use when in the South West though) and they were SUPERB.....invisibly removed some very deep scratches from my 520s bonnet.

BUT I had previously received advice only to use the Chipsaway places with premises as they tend to be trained sprayers who havent got the Ł to start on their own so go franchise.

well my worst fears have come true, the chipsaway guy cleaned up most of his mess with overspray etc and re-painted in a colour which was definatly closer to artic silver, however i still have a patchey "matt" finish which is now where near as shiney as the rest of the paint but he has completely trashed it when he polished it up with his rotary there are 16 marks on the new paint ranging between a 1/2 inch to an inch in length where the polishing pad hasnt gone square on the panel and has scuffed the paint ....
got to call him tomorrow and let him know what i think.....

off to bmw soon hopefully he will still cover the cost

Cannae get the staff chazzer!

Outcome to be expected, hopefully you will get it sorted and he will cover the cost..but I wouldn't hold yer breath. I have a feeling he may cover a percentage of the cost but, hopefully I'll be wrong and he will pay for it all.

..Good luck!
