I read this months article on the Motec engine mangement system with
interest. but is it really an improvement to ditch the whole intake system
when as i understand it only the afm is causing the restriction. replacing
the BMW desingned cold air intake system with a big chunk of foam and a
shiny bit of blue pipe that will draw its air off the back of the rad doesn't
seem like a wise move?

yep..its a bit max power looking!

I am sure there must be a way of routing the airflow properly using black Samco hose which would be much more in keeping with the cars pedigree.

Trouble is, the mapped cars I have seen have all used the same method with the loud intake hose and big foam filter.

you should ask people with the kit installed if they have been happy with the mapping....

I have the kit and you are correct, the air filter arrangment is not the best idea so I elected not to have that filter and instead I modified an original airbox like this...

Once I was happy this was the way to go I puchased this...

And fitted it with a black hose...

I installed the kit myself but due to some quality issues I had to get Powerstation to map it.

All of the high load stuff was OK for fueling (haven't checked the ign adv, but I will!) but when I asked about the cold start, idle control ect I was told to "just mess about with it until is seems right"

Well I've messed a bit now and it drive OK.

If I were doing it again I would buy the ECU and I would modify my own loom (or an ebay spare) to make better use of all of the functions the ECU has. It would probably be cheaper too.

The other thing is they tell you the cost of the kit, the fitting cost but no
mapping cost. stevesingo that does look a lot tidier.

I have driven Steve's car and that is one of the best (if not THE best) M3's I have driven so far!

Considering that he "fiddled" with the mapping on his own, the result is remarkable.

Some of the so called "experts" should have a look at his work to see how good a proper mapped car can drive and I suggest that some of these "experts" should be banned to go near a car while carrying a laptop. Not even to mention to be allowed to charge for their "work"

Yeah, me and Steve make great fiddlers...

I wasn't happy with my 'expert' tuned Motec, I re did the whole ignition map and fuling myself, it is way better. I do need some dyno time though to sort out the areas that you can't really get too while driving on the road...
