I heard it was to do with the new gritting techniques on the roads. The council are "spraying" the roads with something rather than firing grit at your car at ver 60mph. "There is now Brine added to the grit as it spread. It's still the same grit thats always been used just brine comes out aswell. The brine is supposed to stop the grit "spraying" all over the road. It seemingly makes the grit stick to the road. And it isnt cheaper than whats been used in previous years"
Basically the brine turns to slippy s**t (keeping the Dunkmeister happy :D)

Yup nightmare at the moment. Any road rutted road is just a nightmare right now. Terrified of puddles now car just seems to levitate off the road.
Also nearly wiped the car last wednesday. Picture the scene - heading up to aberdeen at about 7pm from Glasgow, late enough to avoid most of the traffic. Start car and after U turn DSC light comes on. Dman not again. never mind - turn car off at next set of lights and then restart to reset system. Ah well no joy, I'll just take it easy. Leaving Dundee i am at the last roundabout and manage to arrive at it with a lorry to my left on the inside lane. It looked like it was going to take it nice and wide so I carried on hoping to squeeze through. got halfway round and noticed he wasn't taking it wide anymore. OH OH, better get through sharpish. You can see whats coming. One wee twitch of the right foot and I'm ahead. Was just turning to the left to carry on straight through the roundabout and the next thing I'm staring at the left hand verge, then the centre verge and barrier then the left verge again AAAHHHHH Slide caught and everything apart from my heart is fine. My mistake i know but scared the living daylights out of me. DSC sure is a godsend, shame it wasn't on then! Funny thing was truck was loaded with Audi Q8s I bet the driving was just saying to himself thats why you should have a quattro audi instead of rear wheel drive. Edited by finnie |

Maybe you're right I should've held my speed at 20mph on the motorway and increase my chances of being involved and causing an accident...
Read the threads mate they all state hazardous conditions...none of them said "guess what I was doing 90/100mph in the rain", if so they are stupid and reckless which I'm not. All I was suggesting that preventive measures for the future especially if climate changes are certain. |

As a Civil Engineer and fellow motorist I wholeheartedly agree with your comments. However as grahame has quite rightly pointed, our fuel duty, road tax fund etc goes on everything else bar the roads. Aside from surface water issues, shoddy patch-up work by contractors maintaining existing services has also been the norm for near enough a decade, only now have transportation departments in local government authorities acknowledged the problem. Back to surface water though and in terms of the money required first of all for research into what materials to use, sustainability issues and as mentioned the tree-hugger enviromentally friendly contingent and your better off just accepting that your going to have to change your tyres at 4mm mate. Dont expect anything from these clowns that way you dont get dissapointed Edited by BMW328i |

Just a little comment from Ireland. Our last track day was in torrential conditions. The drivers that went out and drove hard learned a lot about their limits and the car's limits. It annoys me when people say they will not do a track day when it is wet. A wet day is when you learn most. You could come away from a wet track with a skill that could save yours or an innocent person's life. |

It does not matter how much rubber (apart from the legal requirement) on your tyres if you are going to aquaplane it will happen. I seen this happen a while ago coming back from Glasgow with bus.
Big 4x4 coming other direction standing and falling water hit patch nothing motor could do started to aquaplane he/she had no control and crashed in to ditch at side of road. |

Just back from aberdeen , All the way down the road pouring , kept to about 60 no incidents, but yesterday going north on the M80 I was about 0.5 mile past the river Carron the road was damp but fine open right hander and I saw a "river" , not joking, crossing the road . I was doing speed limitish , hit the water and I was a passenger as I floated across. There was nothing to do but wait untill i landed at the other side , I had moved about a yard sideways across the lane and had a little shimmy to bring things back into line when I did . Did see the road engineers at it as I passed again today but it was still a full flowing river crossing the northbound carriageway( it disappeared into the central reserve. re road engineering I remember about 20 years ago reading about a porous road surface where the rain just pours through the sucface and drains below but it cost twice as much and lasted half as long.....................I have never heard of it being used in this country |

oh guys ye should come over here and try it!!! honestly with the state of someof the roads over here why you see surface water you don't know whether you are going to splash through it or fall into a swimming pool.
wrt the tread depth i read somewhere that when the tyre reaches the 1.6mm mark its already lost 85% of its grip!!! wrt the road surface, there is a part of a dual carraigeway in galway (for those interested its' the piece that goes by the racecourse and tom hogan motors), this has a special road surface that draws water away from the surface and produces less spray. its been there for years and never had any work done on it and its one of the busiest roads into the city. bit o/t there is also a test piece of road not too far away from there that has another special makeup that is like taking 66% of the cars off the road due to the noise reduction (how do i know this? 'coz i made it!!!) D. |

Err, no I wasn't actually, if you loose control in bad conditions, then you obviously haven't appriciated how bad they are, and should adjust your driving accordingly. Low tread levels don't help - but you (should) know what condition your car is, and modify accordingly.

Thats absolute pants Pits..
4mm of tread is just over 50% used...fact. So I do know the condition of my car and it's maintained perfectly. Just because I don't have an F1A accredition (do you?) like yourself doesn't mean that my driving abilities are that significantly less...common sense prevails IMO. Just out of curiousity what do you drive Pits? |

is this maybe the same sort of stuff thats on the dualler outside brechin? it hasnt needed much work done to it apart from the odd patch and has certainly outlasted the tarmac it joins onto on both sides....seems to get rid of water better and has more grip if you need to stop. admittedly it is mostly heavily sloped so this may be helping get rid of the water but i dont recall seeing any big puddles or rivers on it at any time |
