As long as you conform to the standards re: size and visibility / clarity of characters, I see no massive problem about being proud of where you come from (or, indeed, where you would want to be)

Sounds like someone's bullin' there! If it can show up on ordinary flash photography, you can bet your last Euro that it'll show up on the Gatso...

I reckon the standard pressed-aluminium plate is much more durable than the acrylic/plastic ones, but cannot find a supplier who will press me one with a yellow background....

It was the silver shadow effect on mine that got me all the attention www.maxem.ie/plate.jpg

I imagine that if you can  photograph the plate from a distance an angle with a regular camera and see the plate then I dont see how the speed cameras would miss it.

Thought I saw one of the car shows or magazine testing a load of the options on plates and not one of them had any effect butthat was a while back.

Anyway I'm on bog standard fully compliant plates now

I was chatting to a fella from donegal before who had kind of hologram plates - he paid 60 eurons for them but apparently they cannot be seen by the cameras.
Doesn't stop an unmarked car pulling you over though!

...but this:

probably is not. This is the rear plate on my old Six, as supplied by Fancy Plates. Although the character sizing is standard Irish, as is the Euroflag emblem, the yellow background is not (Fancy Plates turned it out in this colour to my commission, as the UK police - Bedfordshire Constabulary - stipulated to me on the one and only occasion that they pulled me up for having the white background on the rear). At the base of the plate, my little "advert" for the Clare Equestrian Centre would probably not be acceptable either....

pretty much. It has become so strict that even incorrect sizing of the characters can result in an NCT failure.

not according to the links I mentioned before.

Quote: The registration number consisting of numbers and letters must be in black on a white reflective background
The name of the county of registration must be in Irish, (examples are Baile Átha Cliath, Corcaigh, etc.)

The flag of the EU and the letters "IRL" must be placed on the left-hand side of the plate, the flag comprising 12 gold stars in a circle, the letters in white beneath it, all on a blue reflective background. No other numbers, letters, marks, etc., should appear on your registration plate.

In other words, this bog-standard format:

is acceptable (if you ignore the UK registration). This is the ordinary pressed aluminium plate available from most / all good Irish motor factors, in this case Ennis Motor Factors.

Guess they're illegal also.  I suppose its not illegal to sell them but is illegal to use them, bit like radar. Really depends on the Gaurd and his attitude at the time.

What about all those dealers, especially the BMW ones who are notorious for it, that put their name on the plate at the bottom?

Very good on the Newbie confusion device, when do we stop being Newbies by the way?

Just looked at fancyplates site and they have a disclaimer that states "Plates ordered from the Standard Irish plates Constructor are suitable for use on public roads in Ireland. Some plates ordered from our Fancy Plates Constructor may not meet requirements for use on public roads."

He accused me of putting them on to evade speed cameras, but they were on the car when I bought it, actually I bought it from a man of the cloth (Church if Ireland), somehow I think he put them on to match the ccolour of the car rather than evade the cameras.  From reading about the cameras I don't think there is anything that prevents them being seen aside from leaving them filthy

Looked around for as much info on plates as possible because I was so ticked off with him but based on this document SI 318/92   anything other than the 12 stars with IRL on the blue and the standard letters on a pure white background is illegal as far as I can see.

3. ( a ) The plate on which an identification mark is exhibited (in this Schedule referred to as "the plate") shall not contain any words, letters, numbers, emblems or other marks of any kind other than those required under this Schedule.

I reckon its a quota game that they pick the responsible people that they can find their address and will show up in court, pay the fines etc rather than go after the no tax, no insurance unroadworthy car brigade cos it takes too much time and requires some real work.  I'll probably be arrested on the way home now for that comment........

You can make a really tasteful plate from this lot without going over the top and apparently they are legal.

Better to get the new plates fitted as soon as you can. If the Guards will arrest a mother of 8 and drag her off the jail for non payment of a 160EUR fine, leaving the 12 year old kid in charge of the rest, they won't have any qualms in nicking you for your existing plates.

Maybe they thought they were photo-reflective plates?
